Do you really want to throw your green cash cow to a viley veteran that is a master boxer?
Marquez was a great Super Featherweight and a very good Lightweight, but even at Lightweight he was out of his depth physically. Juan Diaz dominated him physically and was clearly the naturally bigger and stronger man. Marquez was only able to beat Diaz because of his skills, but even Malignaggi was able to dominate Diaz, and Campbell destroyed him.

JMM simply doesn't belong north of 135. He had slowed down even at 135, and had lost much of his sharpness. At 142, he was really painfully slow and seemed to have lost most of his pop. 140 is much closer to 142 than it is to 135, and Marquez is still a blown up Super Featherweight.

Of course Khan won't walk through Marquez, but he will almost certainly beat him. But it won't mean anything or answer any of the questions about Khan's chin. No real boxing fans will be fooled. And Khan will be known by all real boxing fans as a ducker and a chicken who does not deserve to be called a world champion until he mans up and fights Maidana.

Roach is a pretty astute judge and he was happy that Khan could beat Marquez but was convinced that Maidana was too much of a risk for him to allow Khan to fight him. Roach's claim that there was no money in the Maidana fight is bull****. It may have made less than the Marquez fight but it would still have been easily Khan's biggest payday so far. Plus it would have answered the questions about his chin, and made him into a genuine star, if he'd won, rather than just a hype job, which would have greatly improved his future earning potential. And he could still have fought Marquez after that. Or he could have fought Marquez first on the basis that Maidana would get a guaranteed shot at the winner - instead of which GPB and HBO have made it clear that they don't want Khan to fight Maidana for at least a year. So it's an out and out, craven, duck.

      • Reading some of the comments in here you'd think shady goings-on behind the scenes in boxing are unheard of.

Let's say for a moment that GBP ARE ducking Maidana - we're talking MAIDANA here - not some twelve foot tall Uzbek assassain with hooks for fists. In a Khan v Maidaina matchup a first round KTFO delivered by the latter would be no certainty. Khan is a good fighter with the skills to give any fighter around his weight division something to think about. Roach claims Khan gives Pac as good as he gets in sparring - and I've no reason to doubt him.

Sure, Maidana could drop a bomb on Khan's chin. But he can do that to any fighter.

As others have stated - Khan is a talented kid with serious earning potential. But he is a kid, first and foremost. Provided he's going in with fighters in his class and not tomato cans I'm not all that bothered. If he keeps winning the big fighters will come. It's inevitable.

        • Amir Khan is a *****!!! I see Khan headbutting Marquez, and getting a cheap victory like he did over Barrera! Khan is afraid of a young lion like Maidiana!!

          • No one should be surprised. I swear, every time HBO tries to make a superstar out of somebody, they fall flat on their face. Amir is nothing special.

            • Gary Shaw is a fucking hypocrite because of the way he's hiding Dawson from Tavoris Cloud. But I do agree that it sucks that it appears that all Khan is gonna do if he beats JMM is milk his status instead of taking on all comers. I would've been inclined to give Khan more credit if he beat JMM as long as he had some intention to either fight Bradley or Maidana down the line. I still will give some credit to Khan if he beats JMM. But that's like me giving credit to Mayweather for beating Corrales, which I do. However, a fighter's whole body of work means more than just one signature win and these fighters like Berto, Juan Ma, and Khan need to get that across their heads. At least Khan is stepping up compared to those other guys though. Lopez and Berto have never fought an experienced HOFer.

                hmmm......

i seem to remember there was a fighter he had a tough time with coming up.

guy never got a rematch either.

you know why no one talks about it? because ali proved his courage in his career.

let's give khan some time to prove it.

btw......khan is not really a world champion. at least not in the terms of ali was when he beat liston.

khan is just another beltholder. he has barely over 20 fights. i think i'll wait before calling him names.

That's not how he sees himself or is presented. And when someone wins a title and calls themselves a world champion, then blatantly ducks the first mandatory who presents a genuine risk; and when that mandatory is effectively bribed to step aside not for one fight, but for an entire year, that's the sort of thing that has led to boxing no longer being a mainstream sport. In a geneuine sport, you don't claim to be a champion unless you're willing to test yourself against all comers.

                    • This is my chance to show that Americans do NOT hate Brits. A world champion talking the queen's English is now getting HBO "gangsta" protection. Need I say more?
