He's 28. Age has nothing to do with being a prospect. And I realize he's not a prospect. Stop putting words in my mouth. He's a champion but he has nobody on his resume worth talking aboutLast edited by Rabbit ♠; 01-25-2010, 02:11 PM.

Gamboa looks like the real deal but he has his flaws defensively.
Am I the only one who thinks Lopez will win they eventually meet?

Gamboa is not a champion, he's a "champion." That farce that the WBA pulled by making him the featherweight "regular" champ and Chris John the featherweight "super" champ is an insult. To be the man, you have to beat the man. I want to see Yuri on top of the world, but let him earn it. This kid has the potential to be a superstar, but he's not there yet. In the mean time, I have no problem marveling at his exceptional talents and being entertained in the process.Last edited by CubanGuyNYC; 01-25-2010, 02:21 PM.

You want to see him get KTFO because of somebody elses opinion, not because of him as a fighter. That's more ******ity than ANYBODY else has shown.

There's no doubting his potential and obvious gifts. But I can't understand what makes him so praiseworthy now versus, say, his October fight against Whyber Garcia. Because he destroyed Rogers Mtagwa? Gamboa did exactly what he was supposed to do. A fighter of his caliber is supposed to quickly dispose of, or at least completely dominate, a journeyman like Mtagwa. To me, getting all crazy about Yuriokis Gamboa at this point is akin to blowing your wad in your pants. It's just not time...yet.
Even ESPN's Dan Rafael doesn't seem to be immune. Here's an excerpt from an article he wrote on ESPN.com:
"Gamboa is absolutely electrifying to watch and his hand speed is incredible. Has there been a faster fighter in the sport since Meldrick Taylor was in his prime? Gamboa, 28, the 2004 Cuban Olympic gold medalist who defected after a brilliant amateur career, might be even faster than the best of Floyd Mayweather, Roy Jones, Manny Pacquiao and Shane Mosley. Seriously. Mtagwa, 30, of Philadelphia but born in Tanzania, is no slow poke, but he looked like he was in neutral while Gamboa looked like he was in fifth gear as soon as the fight began. At one point in the fight, it looked like Gamboa got off five punches before Mtagwa could even put his hands up."
The highlighted portions are some serious statements, wouldn't you say?

Jesus, they talk as if he's beatin the best of his generation. The guy has been dfeasting on Cuban amatures and Tamato cans. I like his style and he's fun to watch, but your just a plan nutlicker. lets see him win a strap in multiple divisions before you act like he's "once in a generation"

Lopez didn't get a lot of credit from a lot of people for beating Penalosa because he came up in weight but at least he didn't weigh-in a Division lower. Lopez has a better resume already and has accomplished more(two division champ). We'll see when they face each other.
While I think that Yuriorkis is much more physically gifted than Juanma, and a much more exciting fighter to watch, you speak the truth. I don't think it's clear who will beat whom. But I do believe that Gamboa has superstar potential that transcends cultural/nationalistic lines, while Lopez is a good young fighter whose career is being built on a substantial Puerto Rican fan base.

Lol Dan Rafael Sounds like Kellerman, when he was saying Williams was a mix of Calzaghe, JCC and Tommy Hearns. Then everyboody wa brought back to reality.
Originally posted by T-97 View PostI would compare the two to Jones and Hopkins (Not necessarily their fighting styles, stay with me).
Gamboa depends on his natural athletic ability, speed, reflexes, etc.
Lopez is less athletically gifted, but is better fundamentally, can box, can punch, is tough etc.
I expect Lopez will have more long term sucess than Gamboa, assuming the two live up to potential. But Gamboas sucess will be more spectacular.
Hoping people understand my analogy...
