Comments Thread For: Vanes Survives Gut Check, And Knockdown: Tops Ouma

By Jake Donovan - Top Rank’s newly developed Fox Sports series “Top Rank Live” saw several changes in its inaugural episode, including changes in its main event and its co-feature falling through at the eleventh hour.

Through it all, the series managed to jump out to an impressive start, headlined by junior middleweight contender Vanes Martirosyan overcoming a slow start and a late knockdown to take a hard-fought unanimous decision over former titlist Kassim Ouma.

The bout headlined a televised tripleheader, aired live from The Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Martirosyan, 153 lb, knew going in that the bout would be the toughest test of his young career, but still struggled early to find his rhythm. Ouma, 150, was in his face from the opening bell, fighting with the will and desire of an ex-champion in search of one last great moment, if not a career revival.

The first couple of rounds saw Ouma charging forward, landing several straight lefts, while Martirosyan fought in reverse with the intention of boxing from the outside. Several two-way exchanges ensued, but Martirosyan’s best moments came often in reaction, landing right hands after Ouma was able to score with left hands down the middle. [Click Here To Read More]

The judges definitely had it too wide. But although he missed a lot, Vanes was landing the cleaner, more effective punches in most rounds and so he deserved to win. I scored it 95-94 for Vanes.

Ouma had a big advantage in experience, having fought far better opposition than Vanes, and that showed during the fight. But Ouma seemed hurt and very tired in the last 30 seconds of the 10th, I think if it had been a 12 round fight, Kassim would have been stopped.

This fight gives Vanes valuable experience he's going to need at the highest level.

Yeah, I have to agree. I could see it 1 pt either way - or if you want to score the 9th round 10-9, then a draw. I had Ouma winning 95-94.

Still, it was messed up. Ouma gets credit for 3 rounds on two cards, but neither giving him a 10-8 round. The one card in which he gets the 2 pt round, that judge only gave him one other round in the entire fight.

Ouma's never appeared to get much leverage on his punches but was still turning Vanes's head in every direction. He definately landed the cleaner, harder shots thus scoring the knockdown. For 60% of that fight Vanes looked like Andre Dirrell. Ouma was jobbed big time and won on my card 97 92

How the hell did you score it 115-114 if it was only a ten round fight??

You know though, if you score a KD in boxing you give it a 10-8 round. Unless you are completely dominated and out on your feet, you have to score it a 10-8 round for whoever scored the KD.

That round was close either way without the KD though. With a KD, it's an immediate 10-8 round. Unless the the rules are different in that fight.

I don't know man. That was really bad.

Didn't see the fight, but sounds pretty typical.

Sorry, I'm getting tired. I meant 95-94 as I posted in the discussion thread.
