I'm sure you all heard about Roy Jones Jr. vs. Bernard Hopkins II what ended up falling apart, because they couldn't agree on certain things. I don't know the whole story behind that, but I read that one of the problems was the money. Hopkins felt that the purse should be split 50/50, I think Roy wanted it like 65/35 (not sure..) but anyway, what do you all think it should've been? Do you think Roy was right because he already beat Hopkins, or do you think Hopkins was right that it should be 50/50 since that fight with Roy Jones was years ago, and he's proven himself to be a potentially better (in different ways) opponent than the Bernard Hopkins Roy Jones fought in their first meeting
Did Bernard Hopkins deserve a 50/50 split?

Hopkins, at that point, barely deserved a 70/30 split, because Jones was the top p4p fighter and Hopkins only had 1 significant win vs. Tito, Roy woulda been the guy to put the butts in the seats and it would have been for his lt. heavyweight championship, B-Hop was too stubborn to take the short $ but i guess in the end it worked out for him with the $15mil+ he got for the Oscar sparring match -
jones deserved the greater purse because 1) he had already defeated hopkins 2) jones had the bigger name and 3) hopkins may have priced himself out of the rematch, like he is doing to taylor. imo its an attempt at making himself look better in history, so he could tell himself at least he tried to fight big time guys but the fight fell thruComment

Roy wanted a 60-40 split, but Hopkins wanted it to be 50-50. Even though Hopkins is a great fighter, and at that time, he came out just beating Tito, Roy definately deserved a bigger purse. Roy was considered #1 P4P, and that alone should be a reason to get a bigger purse, addition to the fact that he already beated Hopkins. So I thought that 60-40 was definately fair.Comment

There comes a point where it is better to take 35% or whatever it was of $15,000,000 which is about $5,000,000 rather than the 80-90% he took against Hakkar which had a purse of about $600,000.
Fighters that want the fights that bad take the short money. Like Judah vs Spinks.
Fighters that don't want to take short money in the biggest fights of their lives are scared. Examples being JMM after his fight with Pac.Comment

Bernard isn't ****. He couldn't command 50-50 with a superior fighter like Ruiz. With Roy Jones he might get 15% and some coupons to KFC.Comment

Hell no. Ruiz is the man and he shall be back to unify the division of cowards who wouldn't face him.Comment
