Comments Thread For: Top 25 Fighters of the 00’s: Part II: 11 Through 25

By Cliff Rold - Ten years goes by fast. The first truly great fight of the decade, Marco Antonio Barrera-Erik Morales I, doesn’t feel like that long ago.

Then again, neither do the primes of Mike Tyson and Sugar Ray Leonard.

The point is time passes quickly. Once a year, the world acknowledges that with remembrances of the last twelve months. Those aren’t too difficult. They work the short term memory, picking out those things which still felt vital in the time of their selection. A whole decade can be more difficult, forcing a harder look at the pockets of time, comparing moments of greatness to longer bodies of work.

Voting was solicited amongst the BoxingScene staff for top ten’s of the decade but some went above and beyond in their considerations and rated more. Many of those votes are included and reflected here as well; all fighters from 18 forward received editorial voting consideration.

This fighter review, a look back at the best of the 00’s, began previously by examining fighters who just missed the cut. Today, attention turns to the first fifteen fighters who did. Remarkably, in a supposed down decade, there is not a single fighter who doesn’t deserve to be at least voted on for the Hall of Fame and there are less than a handful that aren’t almost guaranteed enshrinement. Masamori Tokuyama isn't Korean-born. Being a Korean, he was born in Tokyo, Japan and spent his pro career in Osaka. This is a nice list, I'd say, for looking back on the days gone. I wonder how many lower weight division fighters are in the top ten spots. Looking forward to Part III Mr Rold.

Just had time to quickly glance over a few entrants, and noticed that Winky Wright's losing fight with Fernando Vargas was missing-or else I missed it in my hurry.

Also in the Castillo=Corrales saga, the name of Castillo (in brackets) was put down inadvertently instead of the name of Corrales.

Again, I was in a rush and may be completely wrong. All in all a most interesting if slightly controversial list, which I look forward to reading tomorrow.

Collazo fight was close but lazcano only won 2 rounds in total on all three cards.

Seriously you need to rewatch the fight, Hatton beat the **** out of him for 35 and half minutes of that fight.

Hatton was rubbish against Lazcano and almost got KOed but he comfortably won the fight.

I will literally laugh is they put Joe Calzaghe ahead of guys like Winky Wright, Roy Jones, SHane Mosley, lennox lewis hell even ricky hatton, It will be funny if they do because the only guys joe beat that are notable are kessler(overrated and exposed), hopkins(44years old! foot speed shot, look what JT done to him), Roy jones shot/wasted in one round by a sub par fighter, Joe your like gayweather on speed as far as ducking and cherry picking goes

I like the list as it its somewhat similar to the fighters i have for my almost done top 175 of all time. I do think my order will be different, but the important thing is making the list. The Bert Sugar, ESPN, and RIng Magazine are all different.

Guys like the Original Joe Walcott or Mysterious Billy Smith is simply not going to make modern lists. Its hard to rate fighters from the bare knuckle era when there is little film around and when due to racial reasons didnt always fight each other. As a result, some of the best black fighters only fought other black fighters and the same as whites.

I do like that atleast recent fighters are being acknowledged. A few of them i do believe are in my top 175.
