Often fighters weaken themselfs making weight or fighting below their natural weight. Then when they rise in weight classes they gain strength.
Punching power increasing as you climb in weight?

His power isn't all of a sudden at 147 though. If you follow reports over the years he's hitting harder as he gets bigger. When Roach was training Oscar for Floyd he was saying matter of factly that Pac was hitting harder than Oscar, even back then.It amazes me that 1 year and 5months pacquiao went from 135 to 147 and said to be all mosty muscle, and then they compare him to mayweather but floyd went up gradually i.e he stayed at lightweight for 3 years where pacquiao had one lightweight fight against diaz and then went to welterweight to fight de le hoya in light welterweight!then cotto in welterweight a year later!
He and Margarito spars with Rashad Holloway (this story came up after Marg/Mosley) and Rashad said Pac hit harder between the two.
By the time Manny is in camp for Cotto, Roach is saying "this is the hardest I've ever felt him punch" and how he knew they were going to win because "I have the puncher in this fight", it's amazing.
I would've changed my pick if I remembered all that for the fight. I didn't think there was any way Manny's power could compete with plaster blasts, but it's comparable even against that.Last edited by Haglerwins; 01-03-2010, 12:27 AM.Comment

Pacquiao hits you when you can't defend against it, from weird angles and you never see it coming. This is why he KO's peeps.
He's got pop for sure, but to simple people they think he's just a freak who hits to hard. Thats not it at all.
Pacquiao has a very strong set of legs, so he can jump around and attack you from weird angles, and launch power punches when where most fighters would be off balance. Pacquiao often looks off balance himself, but his heavy set of legs gives him a strong base in these situations.
At WW, he is a big puncher, but no more so than Shane or Oscar or even perhaps Cotto, only difference is he's hitting you flush and you just can't see it coming. Non of those guys were able to do that.
The other thing is, because of his proportions (big head, big calves) he looks like a "little guy" because often smaller men or kids have those type of proportions because they are still growing. When in reality, he was damn near as big as Cotto fight night, and was damn near as Big as Ricky. The average Joe watches those 2 fights and sees no size difference at all.
Manny has been coming to fight at 146 in the 130 lb weight class, he moved up in wiehgt and only put on 2 lbs, only he didn't starve himself.Comment

I think he is just plain hitting harder overall as he's climbed. The blind punches are just even more dangerous now. Roach's comments for instance are from just doing padwork with him working with that power straight up.Comment

It's possible. I think Pacquiao was a natural JWW or LW to begin with. He was just poverty poor when he started so naturally, if you dont eat, you dont get muscle, which means your skinny. Then when he got rich from killin the mexican legends, he finally started to eat properly and thus he filled out his body more.
KOing Hatton and Cotto is another story. Because he refuses a specified drug test. It raises alot of questions.
It's sad cause I actually liked him before all the fame. Now he is questionable.Comment

Mayweathers, Malinangi, and haters are poiting that Pac gained 17 pounds in 1 1/2 years due to him going from 130 to 147. He did moved up to 147 but it does not mean he gained 17 pounds. Just look at the offical weigh in against Dela Hoya and Cotto, He was around 142 and 144. So his average is 143. Is that really 17 pounds and he weigh more during fight night.
Also, before the Gayweather's jealousy of Pac that lead to the drug accusations, some in this forum were claiming Pac was a natural ww due to him being above 140 in his fights at jr. lighweight. Now that there is an accusation, suddenly he takes illegal substance when he moved up.Comment
