WHEN SHOULD CLINTCHING be ALLOWED in BOXING?

Many different views on this subject my friends. People have came on the show and expressed dislike for it and others say like it or not it is a part of boxing. My question warrants a good logical answer and if you could provide a fight that backs up your assesment of the rule that would be great....Lefty

This is a really subjective issue that no strict rule should be made about. The ref just has to use his best judgment as to when it is in excess. A fighter always should have the right to hold if he is hurt though in my view.

I think it's OK unless it starts disrupting the flow of a fight, that's when it gets excessive IMO.

I agree with that point, but apart from that clinching shouldn't be allowed. One of the reasons why Hagler fights were so exciting is because he could fight on the inside (a lost art today) and not clinch as soon as an opponent got close to him. I remember how frustrated I was as a kid watching Tyson fights, when as soon as Tyson got inside they clinched him. Technically it is illegal but a lot of referees turn a blind eye to it.

In my opinion it always disrupts the flow of the fight, I remember trying to watch Ali Frazier II the fight came to a halt every time Frazier got close.

Only when you're hurt. The only actions one should be doing with their arms and hands are punching and blocking. Clinching is not boxing. It has been allowed to be used because of favoritism and corruption, but it is, infact, an illegal tactic.

I don't really have a problem with clinching because it's a part of boxing and good strategy from time to time like what Andre Ward did with Kessler.

But I have problems with guys like Berto, Ruiz and Hopkins who just go overboard with it, although I let Hopkins go a little with it because he is pretty old and can't keep a high pace anymore.

When one fighter is constantly coming forward and ther other is not moving backwards or is against the ropes he needs to create space this may be done by pushing off which is also an illegal tatic or using his elbow to move the fighter backwards. To grab on to me as long as you dont hld until the reff has to break you apart is not too bad in comparison to a fighter who throws a few punches and then lunges in to hang on to the other fighter. That to me is annoying. Holyfield did it to Tyson in their first fight hit held and headbutted excessively. Whether we like it or not it is a big part of boxing.....Lefty
