I don't see what relevance the fact he's a Champion has to with Canelo being able to make 152.
If Pacquaio-De La Hoya was for a Vacant Paper title at 147 would that somehow make Pacquaio-Cotto less legit?
I understand the notion of the belts being on the line being silly. I can agree with that. I'd rather the belts not be on the line. But the belts are only there for promotion anyway.
In regards to Mayweather's comments on the catchweight, I again fail to see what relevance that has to Canelo and his ability to make the weight.
If Pacquaio said he was opposed to catchweight's would that again make the Cotto fight less legit?
In regards to the fight's legitimacy, which at the end of the day is what is important, it is very difficult to support one and not the other.
You're right, those 2 are not related, but one wouldn't even be an open question (and it is, he may well be affected though not dead at the weight) if the WBA Super champ did as a champ is expected to do and as he boasted of doing, fight at the regulation weight.
The belts are not only there for promotion, it's a big time unification that'll determine The Man in the division. So if Floyd wins, that means if you wanna be The Man at 154, you come down to 152 (provided near prime, full sized)
If Pac DLH was a for a vacant belt, Pac's request would be less legit, sure, even more so if he was still holding on to the belt that got himself ranked #1 at welter.

1. Requesting one eyed non contender drop down to 150 when challenging for Cotto's 154 belt and #1 ranking
2. Taunting Pac into offering 150. "If Marg gets 150, why can't I? Is he afraid of me?"
Lets also recall that besides the weight, the money wasn't right for that Pac rematch at the CW Cotto proposed. So Cotto went on to storm out of the ring after losing to Trout for peanuts and looking like a midget in the process.

Btw, what we were also talking is Cotto's excuses that kept piling up late in his career. He offered no excuse at the time, remember?

Cotto wouldn't go back to 147 which is what manny was wanting. originally for the rematch. who could blame if it hurt his ability especially since he was more comfortable as a junior middle.

Agree, Cotto shouldn't have to drop down to 147, and Pac shouldn't have to go above his 7th, like he said after Marg. But since Cotto shamed Pac into offering 150, it's a little unseemly for Cotto to be using the drain excuse to pass on the fight.

My point being, Mayweather and Pacquaio are around the same size, Mayweather being the slightly bigger.
Mayweather and Pacquaio at the same age were around the same size. The only difference is Pacquaio turned pro much younger. If Mayweather had turned pro at the same age as Pacquaio, he'd be fighting 10 divisions above his starting weight also.
The champion isn't expected to. There's been plenty of case were Title fights have met in the middle for fights.
I disagree on it being less legit. Whether Pacquaio had a belt or not, what difference does that make to the actual fight and how Cotto would perform? Doesn't make a single difference.
The belts are there but all that matters is the fight.
Mayweather's a small Jr MW fighting his first legit Jr MW fighter. They've met in the middle where both believe will be comfortable.
It's happened many times before and certainly won't be the last.
