He is no where near the top 10 that is for sure...
While Vitali may not crack ATG status he IS no worse than a near-great which places him with guys like Walcott and Baer and Patterson: Surely that's good company. A top-20 ranking is fair I think.

But, it also so hard to really rank him cuz really he is dominating the worse HW division era of all time. Is not his fault. But, his resume is not that good. And, then you look at his resume it shows a loss to the 2 best fighters he has fought is not really good. I know the Byrd should of not been count against him. But, it is in the record books. And, Lewis beat him. I don't care what the excuses are. It was a legit win.
I may catch heat for this, but the more I watch Vitaly, the more he reminds me of Primo Carnera in the way he fights. I think Vit is a bit overrated because of the weak state of heavyweights, while Carnera is almost universally underrated because of his ties to fixed fights.

I agree with you. It's one of the reasons I think giving an exact ranking to an active fighter is dicey. Usually a little time is needed for perspective. And of course it's difficult to gage just how good a fighter's abilities are when he's fighting sub-par opposition. Still, I think we've seen enough of him to say he's hardly a bum. Exactly where he ranks is still up in the air.
