If this was on ABC, they wouldn't have the money to get Mayweather and Pacquiao. It's not as simple as "Put the fight on network TV!" They have to take on a network as a partner. A network has to be willing to spend money to take on an event of this magnitude. Now why would a network like ABC spend $50 million on a single fight when they could use that money to create 4 new shows next year and potentially have the next Lost, a show that would generate hundreds of millions in revenue over a decade. And we all have to shell out 60 dollars to view it. Not to mention that almost all the viewers have HBO which is about 20 dollars a month and whatever cable prices are. Imagine if this fight was on ABC where everyone could see it. Instead our sport went to PPV where only a very small portion can follow the big name fighters. Sure, it will probably gross 400 million dollars but this could be the last larger than life fight due to the ****** heads of boxing. It pisses me off to think where boxing is headed.
Let's say that they Mayweather-Pacquiao a 2 hour event, the only way ABC, Top Rank, Golden Boy, and the fighters make even close to as much money on network TV is if they could charge $3 million+ for a 30 second commercial to advertisers. Advertisers would never pay that money unless it was guaranteed that the fight would do Super Bowl ratings. No matter how much hype and publicity Mayweather-Pacquiao gets, it won't do Super Bowl numbers.
Boxing has to rebuild itself to get a LONGTERM contract with a network like ABC or NBC. Mayweather-Pacquiao, despite your complaints about losing fans, is a fantastic step in the right direction. It's going to make a ton of money in Vegas. Because of the revenue it will potentially generate, it will attract big time sponsors. Not Tecate beers, but Budweiser, Pepsi, McDonalds, etc. If boxing builds credibility with top sponsors, the networks will take the sport more seriously.
Seriously bro, you're the one thinking short term.Comment

And why did they drop the sport? Probably because the amount of money fighters were demanding and sanctioning fees/belts. If boxing had stuck with the 8 division, only a few sanctioning body, and restructured fighters pay it would of worked. Boxing followed the same template that they did in the early 1900s and things change. If they had smart people running the sport they would of went the UFC route when it came to running their business. Either way this fight is the biggest in 30 years and I think having it infront of 18,000 is a disgrace. There are ways to make the sport better and bigger, this is a good fight to begin a new chapter in the sport.Comment

He acts like there was a choice involved.
And people need to realize ppv in one form or another has been around over 30 years, even when fights were on normal network tv.Comment

One of the problems I addressed was the fighters contract. I like the idea of fighters getting big time pay because they are masters at their craft but it is out of control. Chad Dawson getting 2 million dollars for a fight is re****, he doesn't deserve that. Did Floyd deserve 8 million dollar pay days for fighting Mitchell or whatever years back? Boxers, Promoters, and bodies are all out of wack when it came to pay days. The sport is where it's at because it burned its bridges due to greed. If this was on ABC, they wouldn't have the money to get Mayweather and Pacquiao. Because no one can follow the stars. DLH was huge because of the Olympics but that's when people paid attention to the am's. If you can't follow the pros right now why would anyone follow the am's and look for the next big thing? If boxing had stayed on the networks instead accepting greed it would of built superstars and careers. Now the only big fighters that exist are fighters that beat the old superstars. That's about to end after this crop of fighters though. All comes back to the people that are running the show.Comment
