Conflicting reports in the media are arising regarding the ongoing negotiations of Manny Pacquiao's and Floyd Mayweather's camps.
WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao (and Philippine congressional candidate) has signed the contract to fight former pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather, Jr. This was disclosed by an unidentified source and first relayed by ESPN senior boxing analyst Dan Rafael.
However, in an interview with Fanhouse over the weekend, Pacquiao flatly denied ever signing a contract:
No, because there are still some things that need to be negotiated. That would be premature and foolish. Nobody ever brought us a contract to sign.
Initial reports from the ESPN version convey the following terms:
The Filipino icon still has "additional requirements and requests."
The showdown will take place at the 147 lb welterweight limit. Pacquiao's WBO belt would be at stake. (However, this could be a major assumption as trainer Freddie Roach stated to Sky Sports within hours of the meeting that Team Mayweather is insisting on a 154 lb junior middleweight limit. Thus, Manny may have signed on the precondition that the bout take place at his more natural 147 lb limit.) >> Obstacles to Manny vs 'Money'
Both fighters will wear 8 oz. gloves with each fighter have the right to choose which brand of gloves to wear. (However, if the bout takes place at junior middleweight, WBO Regulation # 30 stipulates that 10 oz. gloves must be used.)
Both camps have agreed to a 50-50 purse split.
The bout would be labeled "Mayweather vs Pacquiao" (and not "Pacquiao vs Mayweather").
Top Rank champions promotional efforts, with Golden Boy Promotions having secondary responsibilities.
A single press conference will take place in the second week of January (if Team Mayweather agrees to sign off). (We laid out the thinking process for making a promotional announcement after the Holidays, and not before, in the following article: >> A Done Deal?)
The HBO 24/7 series will have five episodes instead of the usual four.
Pacquiao will likely initially train in Baguio, Philippines before heading to Roach's Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles, California. (In a prior article, we discussed how this is a tactical and strategic mistake on behalf of Team Pacquiao:
