  • Mayweather-Pacquiao negotiations hit early rough patch over rematch clause...

This was information shared with me by a source who is in the boxing business and and lives and works in Vegas. I do not have a link. So please feel free to disregard this if it sounds like BS to you.... or you can just take it as a data point for consideration and discussion.

I am merely sharing what I was told, so don't crucify me. Let's be mature.

The Top Rank team is pretty insistent upon a rematch clause. They are asking for "right of first refusal" for Floyd's next fight. Team Mayweather does not want a rematch to be mandated. They want a "mutual consent clause".

It appears that Arum is concerned about future big money fights for Pac in the event that Pac loses. Which makes sense, because there really are no other big-money fighters on the Top Rank roster. If Pac loses, and "loses well", the biggest available fight would be a Floyd rematch. This seems consistent with what Arum has done in the past. If you look at his fighters, they do a lot of rematches. Esp Pac.

Team Mayweather, whether confident, brave or ******, don't feel that they need a rematch, and don't want to be bound by one. This makes sense as it is consistent with the approach that Floyd has taken in the past. He has done everything to avoid long-term or future commitments (no promoter, gave up belts so he wouldn't have mandatories, etc). Floyd has only done one rematch, and he walked away from the Oscar rematch.

Again, I am relaying what I was told by a source who is usually pretty good for me. But you are welcome to take it with a grain of salt. As you can see, this was an objective position. No hidden agendas.

    Peace.

Well this bump in the road was to be expected. I dont think anyone is suprised with the stance each camp has taken. Seems like both camps expect a close fight with the winner barely edging it out by the skin of their teeth.

The Mayweather camp wants a rematch clause to be consentual because they know if Floyd loses Pac would not run from a challenge and would give him the rematch no questions asked.

They also know that if Floyd wins it'll be by the hairs of his chinny chin chin and would like to avoid a rematch if they can avoid it and gloat about how great he is because he beat Pac by split decision.

Can we please try to keep this grown-up and objective?

Here is the more likely scenario, Shadey:

They know that Floyd can make an easy negotiation with Shane where Floyd (coming off the bonanza) would have Shane by the short-n-curlies to command an overwhelming percentage.

If Floyd beats Pac - say by MD - he can go to make buckets in a Mosley fight. And Schaefer has already espoused the position that Floyd deserves more. So Shane has no leverage.

If Pac beat Floyd, he would def want another payday. And as an Arum fighter, he is powerless to refuse it. He can't breach his promotional/managerial contract.

No, not at all. Everything has a price. I'm sharing because you may hear of a weird split and ask "why?!". In instances like that, one side may 'buy" the rematch from the other side.

The person who benefits most from the rematch is Arum. He is thus guaranteed another megafight in 2010 (prolly the fall).

But a mandated rematch throws Pac off his political plans....right?

Note: Hamed had a right of first refusal for a Barrera rematch. He chose not to exercise that clause.

                  Wisely.

Win lose or draw Mosley would prefer to fight Pacquiao because it would help his stock more by adding entertainment value to his resume and the fact that regardless of the situation Pac would give Mosley a bigger piece of the pie than Mayweather would.

You're pretty much agreeing with me that all Floyd would have to do would be ask for a rematch if he lost and he would get it, but if he won he would be a ***** and run off screaming I win to everyone within earshot.
