HBO did not make Oscar do it...Arum did! Oscar said it plenty of times, he was talked into it by Arum saying Oscar could make history by unifying the Middleweight division. Oscar is great, he was a beast in his prime, he fought everybody!!!
why did oscar fight hopkins?

I remember the *****sexuals used to say that De La Hoya was scared of Mayweather thus the reason they never had a fight in so long.. I would laugh my ass off. Yeah, Oscar scared of Mayweather when he fought Hopkins.. Then came fight night they swore Mayweather was gonna beat the brakes off him, when he won by split decision and Oscar barely had a scrach on him then they changed their tune and said a win is a win lolComment

difference is, hagler was a natural middleweight fighting middleweights, welters, and jr welters moving up....outside of hearns, srl, duran, and mugabi, he mainly fought natural middles...solid ones at that
hopkins was a natural lightheavyweight who dropped two divisions, and was fighting weak middles, jr. middles, and welters moving up...
plus hagler sized up quite evenly with srl and duran, and hearns looked bigger because of his height advantage...hopkins on the other hand looked way bigger, stronger, faster, etc. than oscar, tito, etc.Last edited by djtmal; 11-24-2009, 01:31 PM.Comment

Dude do you realize you juat made the best argument against paul Williams fighting at WW ever? Listen Hopkins was a slim tall guy he could make 160 and was at that weight for along time he never fought below 160 and he dominated 160 while he was there....Stop woth the midget bashing crap....All fighters who plants their roots in a division the way Hopkins did are going to fight other fighters who are moving up. You could make this argument about it all day. Hopkins also fought and schooled Tarver who was the LHW king at the time. He would fight anyone....Leftydifference is, hagler was a natural middleweight fighting middleweights, welters, and jr welters moving up....outside of hearns, srl, duran, and mugabi, he mainly fought natural middles...solid ones at that

we're not analyzing paul williams here...we're talking about hopkins beating up on smaller men all his career....especially since he lost all but one fight in which he was equally matched up in size and talent...Dude do you realize you juat made the best argument against paul Williams fighting at WW ever? i don't care how you slice or what spin or excuse you try to create...a natural lightheavy scaling down two divisions to beat up on weaker fighters is a sham....for him to beat one legit lightheavy tells you this guy leaves serious doubt against men his size or bigger...Comment

hopkins was on his way to making history w/ a record # of defenses
HBO probably told him to move up and make the fight w/ Bhop, same as when HBO told pbf to move up to fight DLH and HBO told pac to move up and fight DLH.HBO made him do it? HAHAHA Oscar owned HBO at the time. Oscar was the cash cow of the time. Oscar did fight everyone, he loved to challenge himself. He was never a journeyman fighter just fighting for the money.
He truly believed he could win every fight he ever signed, even the last one against Pac. Once he realized he couldn't he retired, he won't hang around like 99% of fighters do.Comment
