Because Oscar fought the best, period. Say what you will about him, but the man took on challenges and fought everyone he could have possibly fought, with exception to maybe winky wright.
As a fan of boxing, that needs to be appreciated. Mayweather should take notes on risk taking.
I do give him props for that. Sucks that he also lost to all the best, except for an old Chavez, he lost to all the big names on his resume.
question should be, why did hopkins fight de la hoya, a welterweight?
1). Oscar wasn't a welterweight. His previous fight was at 160 and for the last several years Oscar was at 154. So CLEARLY Oscar out-grew the welterweight division.
2). Biggest fight purse in hopkins career. Hopkins NEVER saw that kind of money that Oscar brought him.
3). Exposure. Hopkins was still relatively unknown at the time and Oscar was the most famous boxer in the world.
4). If you're a professional boxer and you turn down a fight with oscar de la hoya, you are a complete idiot and one of the dumbest people on earth. People would kill to get a chance to fight oscar.
5). Who else was there to fight at 160? Hopkins fought EVERYONE there was to fight and beat them all.

O$car won a title at 160 although controversial.
And Hopkins, who wasn't a big star and only had one big money fight against Tito, and declining, wanted a big check for all the years he didn't play along.

just say it was for the money, cuz oscar was'nt meant to be at that weight, he took a pounding from sturm and no doubt he would take a pounding from the 6'1 bernard hopkins
Oscar took a beating against Felix Sturm who was suppose to be his middleweight tune up, there is no way he should of went on to fight Hopkins after that performance, but too late, time and money had already been invested. I say if you are an Oscar fan, just be happy Hopkins took it easy on him.
