I cannot think of any other sport where an athlete gets written off so quickly after running into a stumbling block. Could you imagine if team sports went like this? LOL
I can't think of another sport where this happens either. It's pretty sad to see people ripping a hard working professional boxer to pieces just because he lost a fight or two. Real sad. The dedication and hard work needed just to survive in this brutal sport is incredible. Boxing "fans" can be almost as brutal as the sport itself. They are unbelievably cold-hearted and inconsiderate to the fighters of the sport they claim they love. Imagine working tirelessly to get where these guys get to, the blood, sweat and tears and sheer effort, only to sit down one day and read on some Internet forum a post by a spoilt little kid who dumps on your entire career and says you're a worthless nobody. I don't get it. It almost brings a tear to my eye to read some of the stuff written here on a daily basis. If they were in that position, I wonder how they would feel.

Is it not hard enough just to be punched in the face for a living?

Lol I'm an amateur novice and have been boxing for about 3 years, but hopefully I beat the best in the NY golden Gloves this year

I don't see Calzaghe as an ATG.. I agree that the guy had a great style and I loved how easily he won fights, but he didn't really fight anybody challenging to earn that reputation. To be an ATG i feel that you have to fight the best. WHy didn't this guy fight Toney, RJJ?? There was a reason he only fought in England.

As far as Kessler goes, he does have skills and potential but I don't feel he has enough to be considered as one of the Top dogs in his division or the Kessler that everyone thought he was. We could have never evaluated his potential btw because he never tested himself, so I'm left to believe that what Kessler showed against Ward was as good as Kessler ever was. He was probably out of shape against the Ward fight, but that's not why I doubt his greatness. I doubt his greatness because of his innability to adjust, his lack of effort to want to win the fight and the fact that he was such a limited fighter when it came to dealing with Ward's style. Even an amateur finds ways to adjust a little as the fight goes on. Kessler didn't land one good punch nor combination throughout the first 7 rounds.. IMO there's no way a solid ATG get's schooled by an up-and-comer like Ward, who I might add isn't even a big or dangerous hitter and doesn't even land a meaningful jab for 7 rounds. I was puzzled why Kessler didn't show a little heart and move in on Ward even if it meant getting counter-pounched.

To give you an idea what I think of Prime Kessler:

I think he would have lost to all of these fighters: Taylor, Miranda, Abraham, Pavlik, BHop.

I bet most of you who think he was underrated feel as he could have beat all of those fighters in his prime. I doubt he could have even beat Miranda which would truly question his legacy. Didn't he already duck Miranda once, or was it Taylor?

Let me ask this btw... What exactly was Kessler's specialty? He didn't have any true power(he couldn't even knock out an old Mundine), his speed was ok, his skills were nothing special... What did he really have to offer that other guys like Ward, Taylor, Froch, Abraham can't offer? Nothing except average fighting ability and being white(which has helped him tremendously in gaining fans and being recognized)

Im not writing him off. Never had him written in but figured hed be prepared for Wards tactics. He seemed to have no plan. Hell be back Wards style is difficult for anyone who is a traditional boxer or brawler type. He squats, leans low, holds and hits, pushes when in hold so when you push him off he lunges at you..Kessler is too by the book I guess didnt adapt. He should do well vs Froch. Well see.
