Cotto's Rebuilding Needs a New Trainer, The Right Fights

Leading up to Manny Pacquiao's demolishing of Miguel Cotto, a lot was written about Miguel Cotto's trainer Joe Santiago, and his lack of experience. An experienced corner and quick reflexes were thought to be Pacquiao's biggest advantages. All of those advantages were proven to be true on Saturday night in Las Vegas. Cotto started out strong in the first round but he didn't and/or couldn't make the adjustments necessary to win the fight and a lot of that has to fall on Santiago. In reality a different trainer wouldn't have changed the final outcome but the fight may have been more competitive. [details]

I agree he needs a break..not just out of the ring, but in the ring...

But I'd leave Hatton be..yes Hatton is a draw and beatable (though he's only lost to the two best P4P fighters in the world)

but don't treat him like a piece of throw away meat...he is a champion who has beaten champions and has made it far with what he's got..

berinstain would be good for him,,,but i still think tony will beat him again...easier this time..cotto took too many punches from tony, clottey and now manny....he might improve with berinstain, but he will need to fight a couple of tune ups with berinstain first, then go for another championship...but this is just talk, good idea though

No don't retire Miguel. You can still fight but make damn sure to have a better corner this time. I didn't hear a single advise from Santiago last night. Just don't get discouraged and you'll be back on top.

        War borikua!!

a fight with ricky hatton at 147 will be good. Why make it a catchweight when hatton is weighting about 170 or 180 pound

It would be nice to see Cotto seek out Nacho for a partnership. If Cotto wants to resurrect his career he will have to make some major changes because he is no longer able to overpower his opponents at this level.

Cotto has some good things to work with. He needs direction and some confidence building fights to get himself back in the right frame of mind to be a top tier fighter again. I think he is capable of making some changes. Hopefully he recovers, takes some time off, clears the mechanism and reaches out to a guy like Beristain who can turn things around for him.

Good read, Cotto needs a trainer first and a friend second not the other way around.

rather see him w/ emanuel steward or nazzim richardson. Just dont see a mexican trainer w/ a puerto rican boxer, not being racist or nothing.

how about cotto w/ javier capetillo

i agree, cotto definitely needs to have a vacation. he also needs a tune up fight to get back to that hack and **** style.. when he was fighting manny, he looked very unlike himself.

and #1 most important thing is a new trainer!!! Nacho is a good choice.

He can't have a corner that doesn't push him. If you compare the training footage you see in 24/7 between Pacquiao and Cotto, Cotto's camp is more laid back..And when he works the mitts, he doesn't throw combos.

He needs a vacation, a new trainer, and to find that Cotto of old

                    Boxing vs. MMA

Not to long ago I saw an interview with Dana White who said that the difference between boxing and MMA is if you have a few bad defeats in MMA you can still come back and be the superstar. It's very difficult for boxers who have a few bad defeats to come back to regain their glory. Unlike the MMA, boxers who don't have a perfect record take a backseat to the undefeated champions. If Cotto doesn't retire and comes back, he will have to crush everyone he fights in his return. He can't afford to come back and go the distance anymore. People don't want to see that. Especially in boxing.
