He didn't fight Steve Collins
It's amazing how jones handled his opposition

prime roy is about as near to unbeatable as you can get.
with that said, people need to stop making so many excuses for his losses. roy isn't the only fighter who ever fought at 34 and he isn't the only fighter who's had to cut weight for a fight.Comment

The problem with this is that it was a HW fight he had no reason to dry himself out. The fact that he weigned in will all those clothes lends me to also believe that he wanted to appear heavier than he actually was.
Jones normally weighed in for lhw fights around 180 lbs, for Tarver I he was 185, for Tarver II he was back down to 180 lbs again. For the Tarver fight he weighed in at like 174 or 175. So he must have been cutting like 25lbs for the fight. The fact that he hydrated back to 185 only supports that theory (when you hydrate to a very high weight, it means your body cannot handle it as well. Just look at Kelly Pavlik for example).
.
Good point with the Pavlik fight, Kellys days at mw are over thats for sure
Jones himself has said that his walking around weight in between fights is 190 lbs. On the other hand Eubank lost about 8 lbs of muscle in 11 days to fight Calzaghe. The problem I have with the weight loss is the way his punch resistance just disappeared, which leads me to believe thatere more to that story than just muscle lossRemember, your walking around/rehydrated weight and your weigh in weight are two different things. Just because he rehydrated to 185 doesn't mean he didn't have to cut 25+lbs to make weight again. If it were that easy then anybody would be able to fight two weight classes lower than they usually do. There's no way losing that much weight in a few months didn't mess up his body. Its impossible. Just look at the the points where he actually dominated Tarver:
He looked much better during the second fight, it was in round one and two that you could see Tarver trying to time him with the left hook. Harding also gave him fits as well, Jones never really had much of a defence against a southpaws left hookCLEARLY not the same RJJ. He looks horrible. His reflexes were gone, and his legs were shaky. He was forced to fight a game he wasn't used to because of this (attacking Tarver). Yes it worked in that one fight, but it was only a matter of time before somebody caught him. Sadly it happened in the next fight.
I'm not saying its Tarver's fault it happened. I don't blame him at all. But that doesn't change the fact that it clearly wasn't the same RJJ.Last edited by General Zod; 04-24-2010, 01:55 PM.Comment

According to Levins that was because him and Warren couldn't agrree on the terms. They did offer Collins a fight after he retired when he had broken with Warren but Murad Muhammad killed the fight, he wanted Jones to fight Reggie Johnson instead, which he did.Comment

I think McClellan could beat him
good points, I completely agreeComment

acctually the clothes were to hide how big his body really was. he cut weight to make ruiz think he was smaller than he really was and didnt want show of his body until right before the fight. there is footage of him talking about it in a documentary including him weighing himself at like 203. he was +200lbs thats for sure. When he weighed in for this fight with Ruiz he was wearing a jumper, trainers and tracksuit bottoms. He must of been 190 max, come fight night against Tarver he was back up to 185 lbs. Thats 5 lbs in 3 months or so. As I said before about Toney its the fighters responsibility to get into shape, you can only fight whose in the ring with you. Toney has been complaining for years that he was drained against Jones, but its a moot point even if he was drained or not.
Either way they would of been good fights
it is a fighters responsibility to get in shape, but fighters are rarely drained bcuz they didnt work hard enough. if anything they work too hard trying to make weight and have nothing left for the acctual fight, in roys case he just underestimated how hard it would be to cut weight and didnt give himself enough time.
that said he fought tarver 3 times and the first one he did best, i dont think its just about being drained its about getting old too. roy was wore down from a long time of fighting and the cut became too much, after the johnson KO there was no turning back.Comment

Your talking about the sweet science documentary which is on youtube. The problem I had with that doc was that after the weigh in he steps on a bathroom scale but you never get the chance to see if the scale had been centered or not.acctually the clothes were to hide how big his body really was. he cut weight to make ruiz think he was smaller than he really was and didnt want show of his body until right before the fight. there is footage of him talking about it in a documentary including him weighing himself at like 203. he was +200lbs thats for sure.

I remember watching some Casius Clay vids then watching the Muhammad Ali who fought Frazier I was shocked at the difference. Also the Nunn who fought Barkley compared to the Nunn who fought Scully age really tool its toll on those guys as wellComment

Which supports the theory that something was wrong during the first fight. He may have made the weight better the second time around because his body become a bit more used to the weight class again, but it was just too late for his legs and a lot of his athleticism. You can't just get that back after you've lost it. And even if he could have, age came and destroyed that possibility after a few more fights.
But that's the thing. Some Welterweights walk around at more than 160, but if you put them in the ring with a Middleweight, they'll get knocked out. Walking around weight and weight classes cannot be confused. Yes Roy did have a lot of weight to cut, but he was a natural Middleweight/Light Heavyweight for sure. So when he put on all of that muscle to fight at Heavyweight, it destroyed the possibility of making 175 effectively anymore, regardless of what he walked around at. It wasn't as bad as what Eubanks had to deal with, but both had a very negative effect.Jones himself has said that his walking around weight in between fights is 190 lbs. On the other hand Eubank lost about 8 lbs of muscle in 11 days to fight Calzaghe. I agree that he does struggle with southpaws a lot, but his horrible legs and chin really gave out in that fight. He never got them back after the first fight. I really think the weight struggling contributed to that.Comment
