condolences is a common word.

most people use it in case of death/funeral but it doesn't have to be just for death.

it's for anything that is bad news or awful thing that has happened.

giving condolences for someone who is in the hospital is also common. they don't have to be dead.

no ones arguing...they got mad cause i used the word condolences, when Z isnt dead....but that word isnt only used in death....thats what i was trying to let them know....

I do understand that condolence can be given even when they are not dead. That is the formal definition of it. But you must understand that such a statement is often used when said love one is dead. Hence, this should be used carefully. The implication of your "WOW" "thumbdown" is the reason why it is being taken as such. Also, it can be misconstrued as sarcasm or insult.
