It occurs to me that so many people label fighters a bum after one loss or a subpar performance (as if boxers haven't had off days since the inception of boxing).
Why should one expect their friends to get into boxing when so many fans of boxing degrade the sport themselves by calling every top 10 fighter who isn't the Ring Champion a bum?
People should really think about what they are saying before they make a statement. Think about what effect your statement might have. "Think before you speak" is something everyone should learn in the 4th grade.
Obviously there are problems in boxing but I think one problem is the outright disrespect fans show towards fighters. The word "bum" is the worst thing you can call a boxer. I think anyone who has actually fought for real would be a lot less likely to use that term.
I am not referring to any boxer's BEHAVIOR. That is NOT the issue. I am simply talking about their in-ring skills. What person has the authority to call any fighter a "bum"...much less a top 10 fighter?
It's pretty ridiculous to call guys like Tito Trinidad, Bernard Hopkins, Roy Jones, James Toney, and Dariusz Michalczewski "bums". If one must use that term, perhaps they should use it for a fighter like Rydell Booker or Gerald Nobles, instead of insulting the sport itself by labeling its top fighters with that term.
Most professional boxers have to fight to feed their kids or families and may not have the skills to do much else. Perhaps people should think about that before they call them a "bum".
I think a lot of the fans are quickly approaching "bum" status. I don't call Tarver a "bum" because he waxed RJJ. I don't call RJJ a "bum" because he lost. I don't call Tito a "bum" because Hopkins dominated him. I don't call Mayorga a "bum" because Tito whacked him.
If hatred, jealousy, racism, nationalism, or dumb fans blind someone to the point that they call top 10 fighters "bums", or any fighters for that matter, maybe they are a "bum" themself.
