Fighters were tougher back then. They weren't more skilled..in fact, boxing has come leaps and bounds from even 40 years ago. Technique and training methods have improved to such an extent that I'm sometimes stunned by what I see in the ring, but these guys today just don't have the iron-man toughness that many of the old timers had. THose were different times, and they bred a tougher brand of men than you'll ever see in a ring today except maybe on rare occasions.

Ill take it a step further. I watched Ray Robinson vs Basilio last night and they didnt look to be in that great a shape. And that lil dude gave him all he could handle. IMO Sugar had a lot of flaws but he made up for it with power. In reality I think old school boxers werent as well trained as today's fighters. They did plenty of drinkin and partyin. I take my boy Floyd in 15rounds against anybody from 135 to 160 in history. He is never diggin deep for energy.

Old school fighters were proven warriors who did more with less, just like Larry said who didn't have the luxury of todays fighters!!Imagine just for a second,if Sugar Ray Robinson was fighting right now with all the Luxuries of today's fighters,he would be on a whole other level, plus probabaly undefeated, after beating the best fighters!!Better training equipment, time off after fights, less rounds, better nutrition, the list goes on,think about it!!

dude when have you ever sen Floyd dig in deep for energy? to me he's one of the most gifted boxers, ever. I don't like what floyd has been doing lately (fighting lightweights) but I can't take nothing away from his skills, he's gone up as far as 154 and the only one that matched him up was castillo but Floyd avenged that would be loss, and left it pretty clear by outclassing castillo in the rematch.

The Sugarman was nearly 40 years of age then and had been out of the ring for 3 years. Not exactly the best fight to judge his abilities upon.

Basilio had a greater work ethic than just about anyone today.

How do you think Floyd would do if he had to fight 3 time in 2 weeks against world ranked fighters? Fighting 15 or 20 rounds with 6 ounce gloves on?
There's your answer right there. Close this thread.

how is that the answer?? if floyd was in that time he would too be fighting that many times and be in condition to do so. I guess you're one of the many that think old school fighters are better than today's.
