Additionally, his Ring title could be at risk later this spring if the independent(-ish) ratings panel abides by the publication’s championship policy.
Among the six ways a Ring champion can lose their title are:
...
5. The Champion does not schedule a fight with a Top-5 contender from any weight class for two years.
...
In accordance with Rule 5, Opetaia has not faced a Ring top five contender since his May 2024 rematch with Briedis.
I mean, zero chance Ring still follow their own rules, but this is messy. Credibility of The Ring is going downhill fast.
My opinion is arguably p4p usyk had to give title away but now fighting a kickboxer. Random rules, and more importantly random enforcement makes me think the boxers will not care soon. And congratulating any of these belt orgs is strange. Go down the list of their rulings and I lose excitement for a sport I enjoy so much. Try explaining to a buddy to hype stuff up, the belts, the matchmaking, the politics… and they won’t remember none of it tomorrow and couldn’t care less
A fight of this magnitude should only be for the fake Zuffa belt anyways. I can't imagine what Glanton has done to get a title shot and I say that as someone who wants to see him win.
This is fair and square by the IBF.
Zuffa are announcing a championship belt that has no legitimacy. How can they expect the IBF to follow along?
Zuffa jumped the gun in my opinion, they should have waited to have the legislation in place for them to be able to sanction their own championship.
It's all smoke and mirrors at the minute.
