The problem wasn't Canelo it was everyone else. At one point in time Benavidez, Munguia, Charlo, Berlanga, Scull, Mbilli, David Morrell, and Andrade were all undefeated standing around hoping that Canelo would give them a rose. And while Canelo cherry picked through them the rest just kind of bummed around and took low risk fights so they wouldn't risk their shot at a Canelo fight. What should've happened was that the rest should've fought each other to raise their own profile and reduce other's, but everyone was super sheepish about risking their chance to fight Canelo, the only one to actually try was when Benavidez knocked out Andrade.
Now we're getting good fights because the belts are freed up, that begs the question if you want good fight match ups what's the point of a unified champ?

Typical delusional Canelo fan response. Benavidez
was Canelo's mandatory for years and Canelo ducked him blatantly. Definitely wasn't going to fight Morrell as his mandatory either.
Who the hell did the Berlanga beat to get a shot at Canelo? Yet you think all of these other fighters should have fought each other just to get a title shot. Charlo and Andrade were both world champions. Bottom line is Canelo only fought mandatory challengers when he felt it was an easy fight.

When you have paid your dues and you are the number one contender for a title , you should get what you've earned , a title shot , not an endless round of " prove yourself " fights and twenty kinds of eliminators.

Exactly. Even if Canelo wouldn’t fight these guys (because he earned the right to call the shots) there was still absolutely nothing stopping them from fighting each other.
Instead of sitting around waiting for a lottery ticket they could have dared to be great, taken risks, and created public pressure and demand for Canelo to face one of them.
