The crash was an accident unless someone can prove a sinister motive and act. Culpability for the accident will be a completely different matter and, yes, the matter if whether the driver was reckless will be a topic. For others, on a different day.
I just find it interesting that people (not you necessarily) seem to almost explicitly say they were glad it was the other two and not Joshua, presumably because he is the rich, famous and talented one. Which is why this particular car crash is receiving so much attention in the first place, of course. No one bats an eyelid at people being wiped up in similar ways in India every day (which has the world's worst road safety record in absolute terms).

Officials are mum about the driver in the AJ crash.

From local sources, however, it is said the driver was at a high speed and trying to wrongfully overtake (undertake) on the expressway while going from Lagos to Ibadan, near Sagamu interchange, just before the Danco Filling Station in Makun. It is a busy area, and there were multiple eyewitnesses. As per information from local witnesses and what the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) officer mentioned on the first day, the traffic was high, and AJ's driver tried to undertake another car at speed using the shoulder. That is when they encountered a parked lorry (heavy truck) full of Soya Beans. The driver tried to avoid it but only managed to avoid his side and hit the passenger side, where the two people who died were seated in the front and back, respectively. AJ was seated behind the driver. They were also going in a convoy with AJ' SUV, a bulletproof Lexus, in the front and followed by his security in a Mitsubishi Pajero SUV. The two people died instantly from a direct blow to the head as their side hit the truck, and a part of its metal body went through the windscreen and hit both the front and rear passengers on that side. AJ is said to be conscious but waiting around 8-10 minutes inside the SUV until the FRSC car arrived. It was then decided to take him to the hospital instead of waiting for the ambulance, which would have taken some time.

Initially, some people reported that the driver may have been either related or from the same village (tribal connection) to AJ, and due to the president telephoning and governors of two states involved, the police and FRSC did not know if the driver is to be charged or not (yes, money and connections are big things in Nigeria...and frankly, most of the underdeveloped world). So, they kept mum about it while also gathering detailed information and formal statements.

The tire burst theory is a new addition, as per the driver's statement. It is yet to be verified and ascertained that if a tyre burst did in fact occur, it was during normal driving or when they took the shoulder to overtake (undertake), as in many cases, the shoulder is not always paved or in good shape. There are no marks to collaborate with the tyre burst and loss of control theory, like screeching marks.

A very unfortunate incident. May the deceased RIP.

            .
            terrible terrible thing to happen

i was wondering how the suv hit the truck like that, i thought the truck might have been on the opposite side of the road and as the driver went to overtake he either had a tire blow out or an oncoming car to him caused him to panic and hit the stationary truck nearby

but i never thought of him attempting an undertaking maneuver at speed, that was very poor driving and judgement on the drivers part and if he was doing that sort of thing on the journey someone in the car should have said u better quit that crap before we get killed

then to have bad luck to have that truck in your path, which is very solid no movement from it and also higher then the suv so all in all a very bad mix, looks like he almost veered past it as well saving himself and AJ in the process but not the other 2 guys, i can only image their terror and they see this truck oncoming at high speed and the realisation that its a collision and then nothing i presume

im trying to think if i have ever undertaken at speed before, i dont think i have & even thinking about it gives me the hee bee geebies, so many things could go wrong

I genuinely appreciate your contribution to this thread so thank you. If the driver performed a dangerous undertaking move in busy traffic, I don't think the outcome can be described as unfortunate.

This demonstrates admirable self-reflection on your part and the correct lesson to take from this incident. I regularly witness appalling driving on our roads which results from impatience, entitlement and carelessness. It saves a few seconds at most and people should stop it (and in some cases consider voluntarily relinquishing their driving licences).

Building on this narration, there is a new video of interviews from eyewitnesses that corroborates what I said, but they claim that the driver did not undertake voluntarily, but because someone pulled in front of them wrongly. I am putting the video here, but this might test your "English" skills even if you're a native speaker. And don't rely on the auto-generated text because it too cannot follow and misses or changes words/context. However, it will clearly show you the appalling traffic and (lack of) rules. It's truly a free-for-all "expressway".

More specifically, look at an oil tanker parked at the same location (1:36 in the video), cars using all lanes for all speeds, including heavy trucks in the fast lane (at 1:38 in the video), people jaywalking by climbing over the center divider on an expressway (2:00 in the video), no access control meaning you can freely enter/exit, stop by a local shop, etc., cars driving the wrong way (3:16 in the video), and you can listen to the actual witness' narration (7:11 in the video). They also mention that accidents happen very frequently on that road. At 15:11, you can again see someone jaywalking even as some officials are standing there. Finally, they show some remaining pieces of the car, particularly a side bulletproof glass (15:45 in the video), which the guy says was "a very strong car".

i gave up trying to understand it all, dont have the patience today and that background noise, wait for the police report, the driver might try to shade it towards some issue he was reacting to if he was driving badly or else there was another bad driver beside him forcing him into the hard shoulder? The other guy in the front of the car who would know is dead but im sure other road users know what happened

                      More damning stuff coming out...

So, the driver, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, is being charged with four counts:
                      - dangerous driving causing death,
                      - reckless and negligent driving,
                      - driving without due care and attention - causing bodily harm and damage to property, and
                      - driving without a valid driving licence

The 46-year-old driver is a longstanding member of the boxer’s team, and was granted bail of 5m naira (£2,580), but will remain in custody until he meets bail conditions. He is due to appear in court on 20 January. The Federal Road Safety Corps in Nigeria said they believed the vehicle was travelling “beyond the legally prescribed speed limit”.
