I drank more often then I didn't for most of my adult life. My family all enjoys alcohol, and we have fun with it. Due to some personal issues, I felt I needed to leave drinking behind for a bit. I see no reason to drink when sad or depressed so I walked away.

I am feeling better than I have in years. Lost weight. exercise more (also an excellent way to keep depression and sadness at bay) and am seriously considering taking an extended period away from it to see how that works. With the holidays and seeing my family, I am sure I will throw back a few, but I intend to set a distinct limit on how many beers I will allow myself over the entire holiday season and no hard liquor.

Now do not get me wrong: I still see no problem with casual drinking or having a beer or two with friends and family. But it does tend to become more of a crutch than you realize. I miss it, but am enjoying the results of not drinking a little more. Not to mention how much money I am saving. That crap is expensive.

I am glad you are keeping drinking under control. I watched drinking kill my uncle George when I was younger. We all have our vices in life, learn how to control them and become better people for it.

Good article. This January will be 7 years since I last touched the stuff and never will again. I don't miss it at all, people behave dreadfully on alcohol.

Health experts say even one drink is bad on a cellular level.

Alcohol is not a stimulant , it depresses the Central Nervous System , it might feel like a stimulant when first ingested but it is not a stimulant. I thought that was common knowledge. I don't drink at all , I don't like the effects or the taste.

As a former bouncer at a very popular nightclub on Bourbon St in New Orleans I agree with that statement 100 % , many people behave as you say on alcohol. In moderation it can be a social lubricant. It's the moderating where people fail.

It'll be 4 years for me in January, it just got out of control and became a responsibility once you get older and lose your recoup powers its really not fun anymore.

I feel for you guys that cannot handle alcohol. For me its the greatest relaxation ever. A glass or two with redwine for dinner is heaven. We europeans teach our kids at early age to have a common sense drinking. Other countries ban drinking like USA ( crazy age limit of 21 ) this makes people not handle normal culture. They think drinking is a drug and go crazy. All my friends and everyone in my nation handles alcohol great. But do not want to promote alcohol but with care its the greatest and oldest of mankinds relaxation drink :-) :-) :-)
