  • I wish Promoters would stop saying "_____ Is one of the Greatest of of All-Time" speaking about their client.

I am not a know-it-all about anything, by my agreeable nature, but I've been eyes deep in conversation with other dedicated historians for a lot of years, and by my reckoning, only 28 of the 100 best boxers in modern history peaked after 1970.
That's some difficult math there for these carnival barker claims to catch up to.
Most of these businessman couldn't even discuss fighters peaking before 1970 for 10 minutes.
    (Believe me, I know).

So if Terence Crawford beats Canelo Alvarez, for example; he doesn't become "the greatest of all time" off of that.
Now, follow that up with title snatching wins over Dimitrii Bivol, Artur Beterbiev, Jai Opetaia and Oleksandr Usyk, and we'll have to talk again.

If Terence Crawford beats Canelo he is:
-the 3rd four division lineal champion in boxing history after Mayweather and Pacquiao
-the 1st three division undisputed champion of the modern era and the fifth ever after Fitzsimmons, Ross, Armstrong, and Canzoneri
-the 6th five division major world titlist of all time after Hearns, Leonard, De La Hoya, Mayweather, and Pacquiao

It's an absolute paint-drinking level take to deny that would make him at all time great.

His current resume (TBRB rankings, interim and secondary belts ignored):
W vs #3 Ricky Burns UD 12 (fmr. WBO 130; reigning WBO 135; future WBA 140)
    W vs #7 Yuriorkis Gamboa TKO 9 (fmr. WBA/IBF 126)
W vs #2 Raymundo Beltran UD 12 (future WBO 135)
    W vs #9 Thomas Dulorme TKO 6
W vs #1 Viktor Postol UD 12 (reigning WBC 140)
    W vs #3 John Molina TKO 8
W vs #9 Felix Diaz RTD 10 (Diaz ranked at 147, fight at 140)
    W vs #1 Julius Indongo KO 3 (reigning WBA/IBF 140)
W vs #4 Jeff Horn TKO 9 (reigning WBO 147)
    W vs Amir Khan TKO 6 (fmr. WBA/IBF 140)
    W vs #10 Egidijus Kavaliauskas TKO 9
W vs Kell Brook TKO 4 (fmr. IBF 147)
    W vs #4 Shawn Porter TKO 10 (fmr. IBF 147; WBC 147)
    W vs #9 David Avanesyan KO 6
    W vs #1 Errol Spence Jr. TKO 9 (reigning WBA/WBC/IBF 147)
W vs #3 Israil Madrimov UD 12 (reigning WBA 154)

Other notable victories: Breidis Prescott, Andrey Klimov, Dierry Jean, Hank Lundy, Jose Benavidez Jr

    14-0 vs top 10
    9-0 vs top 5
    4-0 vs #1 (or #2 if Crawford was #1)
11-0 vs fighters that won a legitimate world title
    6-0 vs reigning world titlists
    3-0 in unification fights
    19-0 in world title fights
6-0 in lineal world championship fights
    41-0-0-0 overall record, 31 KOs

Provocative posts are made to be challenged. That is good.

The constant addition of Super/Junior weight division titles and the plethora of ABC titles that underpin those accolades notwithstanding; he's done some amazing work. No question about that; and he is one of the Greatest fighters of this century. He is a certain future HOFer. But The Greatest of all time?
Well, let's see what he does to Canelo and we can go from there. How's that?

No, beating Canelo would be one of the single greatest wins in boxing history. A guy who started at 135 going all the way to 168 (skipping 160 after only one fight at 154) dethroning the reigning undisputed and lineal king (who has also fought and won a belt at 175)? That's straight up absurd.

The proliferation of belts does nothing to diminish these accomplishments.

Lineal has nothing to do with a belt and he'd be only the third four division lineal champion.

There being extra weight classes doesn't mean a ton either when he won lineal championships at 135 and 147 and is skipping over 160. 135, 147, and 168 is more impressive than 135, 147, and 160 would be.

There being 4 belts actually makes it HARDER, not easier, to become undisputed. So being a 3 division undisputed champion in the 4 belt era would be a singular accomplishment. Nobody has even done it since the beginning of the WBC/WBA era; forget the IBF and WBO entirely.

And all of the previous 5 division world tilists did so in the 4 belt era (technically Tommy Hearns' 175 reign was a WBO reign BEFORE the WBO was even widely recognized, so you could actually disqualify him from this achievement and cut the list down to just Leonard, DLH, Floyd, Manny, and Crawford if he wins).

There is no coherent argument against Crawford being an all time great if he beats Canelo Alvarez. It's very unlikely to happen, but if it does then he's right up there with the greats.

          You make a great argument.

What really gets to me is these so-called "hardcore fans" who try to legitimize so-called "Daring to be Great" matchups. These circus-style events are more like WWE productions than real sport. They ignore deserving contenders and disrespect the true all-time greats—fighters who never avoided the best and proved themselves the hard way.
