"Cinderella Man" is one of my favorite Ron Howard movies, my favorite Russell Crowe movie, one of my favorite movies about boxing, and one of the best movies ever made about the great depression all wrapped into one, underrated masterpiece.

    So. Freaking, Amazing.

          How about Cecilia Braekhus?

Originally an orphan in Colombia, adopted by Norwegian parents. Boxing was illegal in Norway and her parents initially forbade her from any combat sports so she had to sneak out of her house to train at a light-contact kickboxing gym. Then she went to Germany to pursue boxing more seriously and was turned down by several gyms for being a woman.

Eventually makes it as a boxer, and in her 11th pro fight she challenged for the WBA and WBC welterweight world titles. She won them and made a total of 25 successful defenses and along the way also won the WBO (23 defenses), IBF (10 defenses), and IBO (8 defenses) titles to become the first female undisputed world champion and the first Ring Magazine Women's Pound for Pound champion. Didn't lose until she was washed up at 39, later got a robbery draw challenging for a title at 154. Still active at 43 years old with a 38-2-1 record and numerous wins over other world champions (Anne Sophie Mathis twice, Mia St John, Chevelle Hallback, Myriam Lamare, Mikaela Lauren twice, Oxandia Castillo, Erica Farias, Kali Reis, Victoria Bustos, Chris Namus, Jennifer Retzke, Eva Bajic, Ivana Habazin, etc).

Eventually they legalized the sport of boxing in Norway after she was already a 28-0 undisputed champion so she could defend her crown in her home country for the first time. So that's a major lasting legacy for the sport right there; an entire country is allowed to box because of her.

          Also she's hot as hell.

What a horrific hand Johnny Tapia was dealt. That he still managed to shine for a time is a miracle.

Mathew Saad Muhammad being abandoned at 5 years old is pretty bad too.

Here is an interesting one. David Capo.

He was a Jr. Featherweight/etc. who beat Gold Medalist Leo Randolph in his pro debut. Then he finished his pro career at 2-18-1.

He also supplemented his ring income by working as a live sex show performer in Times Square.

Excellent article and comments as well. I think that the Peterson brothers, Anthony and Lamont would make for a good movie as well.

Why not Rock Em Sock Em Robots as an animated feature?
It worked well for Lego, and it might generate some interest in the sport among kids - not a bad thing going forward.
                    "You knocked my block off!"

EDIT:Jaysus - they are making one with Vin Diesel. I thought I had an original idea. Dammit.
