I really enjoyed this mailbag. Lots of good stuff in there. I especially liked the question from my fellow San Antonian. I wonder if it comes down to where they are in their careers. Some of them, like Ryoichi Taguchi, fought Inoue early in their careers and were able to go on and win titles. Others were later in their careers and basically got retired by Inoue, like McDonnell. And others are special, like Donaire. I tend to put a lot of credence on where they're ranked at the time of fight, and then on what they do based on where they're at in their career.

Thomas Hearns blasted out fellow ATG Roberto Duran in his best win, followed by beating HOF Virgil Hill at Light Heavyweight.

I’m not sure many people would disagree that Hearns’ blow out of Duran was his single greatest win, certainly better than bombing out Shuler, but I think Bread came at his opinion from a different angle. He just thought Tommy was at his pinnacle when he took out Shuler. In that respect, I think I agree.

Man, that shocking loss to Barkley two years later was an absolutely huge upset.

I always like Breadman’s well articulated praise for Lomachenko. Too many people devalue his career because the modern manipulations of weight classifications completely distort it. Like Kathy Duva once said, I can’t think of any other current fighter who’s challenged himself like Lomachenko has. And, relative to his physical dimensions (allowing for limitations arising from his relatively short stature and reach) I haven’t seen a finer technician ever. Marvellous fighter who deserves to hold a much better pro win percentage than 85%.

With Inoue, he can only fight who is in and around his weight class.

For the most part he has always done that. With the glaring exception of never having faced Chocolatito, Gallo Estrada, Sor Rungvisai, and Cuadras.

But you can also compare the depth of one weight class to another. And at any given time it is a fact that some weight classes are simply tougher than others. That should be taken into consideration as well.
