One doesn't have to be dark-skinned to be called a gorilla. I'm not dark-skinned, but I've been called that, a monster, a beast, ect, because I pump iron. Frazier was a 6-foot, stocky, powerful man. While it's obvious that Ali called him names to get under his skin, to suggest that he was attacking our race as a whole is incorrect.Comment

And everything Ali said about Frazier was racially tinged.
He called him an "Uncle Tom", even though Frazier literally helped him financially when he was suspended from champion.
He called him "the white man's champion".
Howard Bryant called him out for it years ago
So much of him lives today, including his darkest side. His worst moments were in his racial cruelty toward rival Joe Frazier. He was quicker mentally, better with words than Frazier, and whether for promotion or mental advantage, he used his better looks and lighter skin to exploit the racial stereotypes that saddle black men everywhere. He knew the implications of calling another black man a "gorilla," and he did it anyway.
Look, I love Ali the fighter, but we have to consider that he had some personality flaws, even as he was doing great things, in & out of the ring.Comment

In all fairness to Ali, all men fall short of the Glory of God.

Expecting him to be flawless is unrealistic, although his short comings were or can be perceived as detrimental to the black community, considering the black community is who he championed for....

I watched a special on Ali vs Frazier years ago. I know about Joe helping Muhammad out after he had been banned. The show mentioned as I said before, Ali resented Frazier for being made America's champion as a vet who served in the Coast Guard during WWII but refused to register for the draft during the Viet Nam War. Nothing happened to Joe, While Muhammad suffered a 3-year suspension. Ali's attacks of Frazier may have been racially tinged, but not as a racist hates someone of a different race. Muhammad treated Joe as if he was a traitor to his race.
