Morrell definitely lost the fight, without a doubt. But Morrell was in there playing around with Benavidez. Taunting him, show boating, standing right in front of him with his hands down. Even in Round 11 when he got the knock down, he was playing with Benavidez with his hands down at his side. Morrell hurt Benavidez multiple times and Morrell was never hurt. Benavidez wasn't even countering Morrell because everytime Morrell threw, Benavidez shelled up because he felt the power. Benavidez is a good fighter but Morrell showed he is not the same guy when he's fighting someone his size. Gvozdyk showed it too but Gvozdyk was throwing pity pat baby punches. Morrell messed up Benavidez face badly.

Wonder if you even watched the fight.
1. Morrell had his success and also noticeably rocked Benavidez twice. Fourth round where Morrell caught him with a hook after getting caught himself and after the bell in round 11th, But was throughly outskilled and overworked 8-4 or 9-3. He was taunting because he wanted to show he was still in the fight, he himself was rocked in numerous occasions in the middle rounds and demonstrated his grit after he recovered when shelled up. Morrell was frustrated and it was visible, he wasn't able to find openings on Benavidez's high guard while Benavidez either punched through the gaps and peeled off his guard.
2. The "knockdown" is not even technically a knockdown, it was slip as the feet were entangled and the punch didn't land in a scoring area of the body. Was a bad call by the referee.
3. It's professional fighting, who cares about facial bruises in a quite competitive bout, it was the combination of the punches that a knockout artist landed by Morell and leather rubbed from his gloves from blocking. He also got the worse of the headbutt, which opened a cut in his eyelid. Morrell himself had two swollen eyes and a minor jaw injury, he had blood trickling from his mouth that was washed down in some rounds, he sticked out a bloodied tongue when he tounted Benavidez.
Here is some highlights of the fight:

I picked Morrell to win the fight... That being said, he got taken to school. I don't know how much of that is down to a terrible gameplan, lack of ring IQ or experience, or just that Benavidez is that guy who can impose his fight on other fighters, but he lost that fight clearly. He needed to be much more active and much more mobile. I didn't see him use a lot of his usual tools, perhaps because he's not comfortable using them on the back foot or for the other reasons, but it anyone was toying with the other, it was Benavidez. I'm disappointed in Morrell, but hopefully he learns from it and grows and we can see a rematch a few years down the line.Comment

oh yeah just like fury was toying with usyk when he was showboating? thats called being out of answers. when you arent able to match your opponent you essentially give up at least subconsciously and in order to protect your own ego you start showboating and taunting because then you can tell yourself "i wasnt even trying!" because if you did try you would lose, and lose hard.Comment

He rocked Morrell much more than twice. The first time he hurt Benavidez was in Round 2 with a straight left off the ropes. I would agree, he was outskilled in a sense of winning rounds and he was definitely outworked. He wasn't taunting to show he was still in the fight, it's who he has always been. I can agree he was frustrated at moments due to the activity of Benavidez but Benavidez looked MUCH more frustrated and uncomfrotable than him. He wasn't able to find openings on his high guard? I think you need to rewatch the fight in slow mo. Benavidez was picking shots off but ALOT of those shots were getting through. The knockdown wasn't a real knockdown, no, but at that moment Morrell head his hands down and used an angle that Benavidez's slow feet caused him to be off balance. You can not tell me that Benavidez gloves were the reason his face was marked up lol. Yes Benavidez outworked him but he landed a significant amount of shots. You can see it written all over Benavidez's face that he was feeling those shots and was uncomfortable like he's never been in a fight.Comment

The bruises are a combination of the punches that a big puncher landed by Morell and leather from Benavidez's gloves rubbed from his gloves from blocking. t's professional fighting, facial bruising is bound to happen in a quite competitive bout, looked at Canelo against his recent competition, red as a tomato. Yet only some headshots made it with him being also buzzed by unexpected punch after the bell, because even though Berlanga is one of the least skilled fighters at 168, he has punching power and Canelo mostly blocked due to his defensive reflexes having declined.
Morrell was taunting because he was aware he was under the scorecards, he wanted to show he was still in the fight and yes that's part of his personality.
Morrell looked quite more uncomfortable having stepped up against a different caliber of opponent. Unable to repel most punches coming his way. Benavidez made ring quite smaller for him, making it difficult to use angles or have enough room to pull away until the late rounds where both fighters were gassed. He had more success when both fighters tired at rounds 9-12.
And no you have to rewatch the fight in slow motion, Morrell couldn't punch through the guard more often than he could, he instead had to counter Benavidez when he already thrown a punch or create distance to make Benavidez overreach to counter him, whenever he was on the offense he threw combinations which were mostly blocked.
It's bizarre to me that you're just trying to nitpick the fight and downplay Benavidez for having a competitive fight against a top 5 light heavyweight and winning. You have to let go the narrative of how Benavidez only wins because he is bigger than his competition, he ain't getting stoppages after debuting there but he is top technical volume puncher.
Hope Benavidez lands the fight against the winner of Bivol-Beterviev II later this year, just to put this narrative to end whether he wins or losses, because I swear with either outcome, he is going to make pretty difficult for either Dmitry or Arthur not only because of his size advantage.Last edited by Malvado; 02-06-2025, 05:41 PM.Comment

@ saying the loser of the fight beat up the winner and made him so uncomfortable. Morrell hasn't been touched like that by any of his opponents in his pro career! Many times, when Benny was tagging him with combos, he just covered up and didn't know wtf to do! FOH
