  • Comments Thread For: John Duddy knew when to walk away and has never stopped walking

Thomas Gerbasi catches up with John Duddy on a late summer afternoon at Martin Snow's Trinity Boxing Club in lower Manhattan to find out how the popular Irishman managed to get away and stay away from a sport unwilling to take "no" for an answer

Overhyped fighter that had a following. Very average at best.

I remember watching some of his fights live around the time I got into the sport. He definitely had glorified club brawler vibes when you watched him.

I remember Duddy. Entertaining if a bit basic. At the time, he and fellow Irishman Ben Dunne were getting some hype (I think maybe ESPN?).

Good for John that he walked away and found success as an actor. The fight with Lee would have been entertaining but I imagine Lee would have sparked him out of there.

Interesting that both Duddy and Dunne retired around the same time with similar records (29-2 and 28-2), I think Dunne got stopped by Kiko Martinez in his big step up fight.

Smart and lucky. A hard head doesn't mean you can box but he has somewhere else to go.

He was pretty big in the North East. I think that's what boxing needs. They need to build up regional fighters again. The Kelly Pavlik, John Duddy, Gatti, Hearns, Mancini, Juan Diaz & etc. They put butt's in seats and bring casuals out. Those club fighters make boxing what it is. Boxing is the only blue collar sport where you can come off a 12 hour warehouse shift and challenge a world champion ( most likely lose ) but it gives the community something to believe in. That's what the Rocky series is all about.

I remember the crowds that Vinny Pazienza used to bring to the northeast as well. When he fought Dana Rosenblat, it was a heck of a regional rivalry since both were New England guys and you had the cultural clash of an Italian-American versus a ***ish-American.

I always wanted to see Joe Smith Jr fight Seanie Monaghan at LHW but I don't think that one ever happened.

He was very popular. I used to live in Rhode Island when Andrade was fighting. There's huge cape verde population in that mass and rhode island area if Eddie knew how to market him better for that big fan base they could had easily gotten that canelo fight back in those days. Boxing does regional marketing in the UK for their fighters we need that here in America. There's no reason why Boots isn't bigger in the philly tri state area. He needs to start coming out to Penn State area or Southern Jersey area also.

Great read, BScene. I never watched much of him besides the Medina and Chavez Jr. fights, but it's still nice to hear of former boxers living a good life after the sport.
