Comments Thread For: Deontay Wilder invited to bridgerweight to face Kevin Lerena for WBC title

Could circumstances bring Deontay Wilder and Kevin Lerena together? Wilder is nearly five years removed from the last time he held a heavyweight title, is coming off a big loss and is on the outskirts of the weight class for the first time in a very long time.

This would be an ideal fight for Wilder to not only get a win but to be seen wearing championship gold again. Winning a title would once again elevate him in the eyes of the public and he would be in position to garner interest for another high profile fight almost instantly. The problem is that Wilder just doesn’t seem to have the mindset he did when he was knocking people out left and right. He started using psychedelics and his whole outlook changed. Let’s be honest. Wilder is for the most part a one dimensional fighter. His raw power meant he was pushing bigger guys back because they knew and felt that a knockout punch was coming. But he just doesn’t have that killer instinct anymore. We can hype this up and I would tune in. But deep down it feels like it’ll just be smoke and mirrors. I think we’ve seen the best of Wilder. Do I want to be wrong? Heck yeah.

If Deontay has any interest in continuing his career, this might be the perfect way to recapture his "mojo." I can see how he might see it as demeaning, but it could be just what he needs to rehab his career, IMO.Then again, he may have fallen to the same thing that felled Tyson and Smokin Joe, which is just losing a micro-second off of his fast-twitch muscle response, causing him to miss with punches he used to connect with and get hit with punches he used to be able to avoid. I always suspected Wilder's KOs came from a combination of power and speed and I still believe that. He could start fighting people his own size and rebuild his confidence, or he could find that he is not able to connect at all with smaller, quicker fighters. If he still has the itch, it's worth a try, IMO.

Yes, come to bridger-weight to promote it by being knocked out in it.

Imagine going 1-4 in your last 5 fights, 3 of those fights you're pealed off the Canvas, and then get a ****ing title shot out of it.

This sport is so ****ing broken.

Some people may laugh or brush this off as a gimmick but this is the best possible career move for Wilder.

Today's Heavyweights are just too big vs. Wilder, ex Zhang and Parker outweighed him by 30-40 plus lbs.

And Usyk is contemplating moving back down to Cruiser after the Fury rematch. Who knows, maybe Wilder can entice Usyk to fight him at Bridger if he wins the championship.

Deontay Wilder has been knocked out by Zhang, Fury twice, and rocked severely by Ortiz twice.
He should retire from contact sports altogether, that way he can enjoy his money, family, and health, he's earned it!
