Why do people hype up height in boxing ?

    Why do people hype up height in boxing ?

    Having alot of height is overrated in boxing. Being taller would give you advantages of being hit in the face less but you will be beaten to the body alot more. Height doesn’t add power and it usually takes away quickness and reflexes, yet people overestimate it advances. What have got people thinking like this especially seeing many times the shorter boxer winning ?

    Height isn't necessarily all that. Reach is much more important, and that often comes with height. There's a lot of tall fighters who don't know how to fight tall though.

    Here's one big one though. As a tall fighter, you can adopt a wide stance, and the width of your stance dictates the amount of your head movement. You can keep your feet settled and have inches more range control than your shorter counterparts. Or you can be inches out of range from your shorter opponent, and creep your back foot up and land punches when they think you are still out of range.

    If you leverage your stance with your height to generate range, you can maintain power and balance, and you force the opponent to have to lunge, and you can meet them with check hooks and uppercuts when they expose themselves. Opponents will almost always try to target the body more also, which gives you opportunities to counter with powerful chopping blows over the top, since you know that's coming. Junto Nakatani is one of my favorite current examples of a tall fighter who fights tall. Sebastian Fundora is a good example of one who doesn't.

    There's a variety of other techniques that can only be used by tall fighters, just as there is a variety of techniques that can only be used by the shorter fighter.

        I can say, height definitely adds to more leverages which translates to more power. I'll give you a real life scenario I participated in a year ago.

        My job puts on these Olympic events every summer. I work in IT. We did a tug of war event and I was on the team that was made up of tall (over 6'2), skinny, never worked out a day in their life dudes (nerds). Then me. I'm 6ft even, workout every day at the gym natty and get called a freak by many of my peers there for performing outrageous feats of strength with zero supplements minus my 15 dollar walmart preworkout. We were destroying every team we came up against and made it to the finals.

        In the finals, our competition team had 2 guys that go to the gym and were short. Then the rest of their team was a mix of tall, non-tall, skinny, skinny fat, nerdy dudes.

        While we ended up losing, we gave them hell and they were destroying the competition themselves leading up to our finals together. We nearly had them except our one tall goofy guy in the front ended up slipping when we were pulling them over to our side and after that we lost our momentum.

        My point being, I was on a team that never lifted a weight in their life, were just tall, skin and bones and we were wrecking most of the comp that had dudes that go to the gym but were short and I feel it was due to the leverage these tall mofos get. That or I'm just so damn strong, it was all on me to get us to the finals and nearly pull the entire other team across on my own.

          Chico, Margartio, Paul Williams and Fundora all come to mind.

          Not a one of them used their height and reach consistently like they should have.

              canelo fans love to hype it up because their guy is beating up on bigger guys all the time, height is the first thing people see when comparing guys

              another shorter guy tank similar type build had issues when he fought an even shorter guy than him, pitbull

              when an opponent has height reach boxing ability speed chin power etc then it becomes more of a problem

                You remind me of Ben Davison, but a clueless version.

                You say a lot of words, and think you sound like an expert, but in reality are just saying a whole lot of nothing with almost no substance what so ever.

                  With height usually comes reach. Tall/long fighters can be dangerous if they understand their range.

                  But more times than not, your average boxers in the gym over 6ft 2in arent the most athletic. Boxers best heights are from 5'8" - 6'2". 1 of my sons is 5'11", and honestly I think he's a best height for boxing.

                    yes being athletic is very important, tall, a bit skinny & not so athletic may well just spell potential problems along the road unless they can really nail down a style that works for them
