  • Comments Thread For: Erislandy Lara, Danny Garcia eye victory and a place in Canastota

When it was suggested to Erislandy Lara (30-3-3, 18 KOs), who puts his WBA middleweight title on the line against former two-weight world titlist Danny Garcia, that a Garcia victory would be the ticket that granted the Philadelphian entry to the most exclusive of boxing clubs, the Cuban-born emigre countered that the same was every bit as true of him.

I'm too lazy to look up the Ring/TBRB ratings of their opponents so I'll just do the quick and dirty comparison

Lara vs current/future/former world titlists (not including regular/interim):
D vs Carlos Molina MD 10
L vs Paul Williams MD 12
L vs Canelo Alvarez SD 12
W vs Ishe Smith UD 12
W vs Jan Zaveck TKO 3
W vs Yuri Foreman KO 4
L vs Jarrett Hurt SD 12
D vs Brian Castano SD 12

Other notable wins: Austin Trout, Alfredo Angulo, Vanes Martirosyan, Terrell Gausha

    Major world titles
    154: WBA
    160: WBA

He got some bad decisions along the way and he certainly had some good wins but I don't think there's any way he gets into the HOF. Beating Garcia won't do it.

    Garcia vs current/former/future world titlists:
W vs Nate Campbell UD 10
W vs Kendall Holt SD 12
W vs Erik Morales UD 12
W vs Amir Khan TKO 4
W vs Erik Morales KO 4
W vs Zab Judah UD 12
W vs Lamont Peterson MD 12
W vs Paulie Malinaggi TKO 9
W vs Robert Guerrero UD 12
L vs Keith Thurman SD 12
L vs Shawn Porter UD 12
L vs Errol Spence Jr. UD 12

Other notable wins: Lucas Matthysse, Brandon Rios

    Major world titles
    140: Lineal/TBRB, Ring, WBA, WBC
    147: WBC

Garcia has a much better list of names, though many of them were past prime. Still, his run at 140 was pretty legit and if he gets into the HOF it will be based on that, not on his vacant belt at 147 or this catchweight fight against an ancient Lara.

I don't think this fight is consequential either way in terms of HOF candidacy, is what I'm saying. Lara isn't getting in and if Danny does it won't be because of this fight.

If induction in Canastota meant anything, neither of them would get in. As it is, who knows? It’s pretty pathetic that Garcia’s name — and even Lara’s — is being mentioned as a HOF career. As a sport, boxing is a joke.

I think this fight is actually the best matchup on the card. I’m curious to see what Garcia has left and at a weight nowhere near where he started and hasn’t spent any significant time at. Smart money is on the Cuban but I just hope it’s a crackin fight

The hall of Fame isn't making these comments. The fighters and writers are.

Danny Garcia is not a Hall of Famer. Even if he does defeat Erislandy Lara or not. However, it probably won't even matter though. Since the bar is now been set so low with no criteria.

i personally, don't believe that a fighter who picks and chooses who he wants to fight and whenever he wants to fight them; Is my definition of a HOF. Danny's resume' is not warranted to become a Hall of Famer.

He has fought and only defeated two good fighters in their primes and they are Amir Khan and Lucas Matthysse. A Hall of Fame fighter is someone who challenges and defeats the very best fighters of his era in their primes and never duck them.

The fact that he played it safe for most of his career by avoiding risks against the most elite opposition and competition in his career outside of the ring; Should disqualify him from HOF status.

Man i was tempted to put some money down on the underdog but the more i think about this fight, the more I see a dominant Lara win.

Not a good bet, no matter the odds, in my opinion. Danny doesn’t stand a chance. He’s in this fight on name recognition alone — hasn’t fought in two solid years, had one contest at 154, and he’s never fought at 160. Lara’s 41, but he’s relatively fresh. I see a beatdown coming, putting to rest any nonsense about Garcia and the HOF.

Lara doesn't belong in the hall of fame and Garcia is probably on the wrong side. He had a good run at 140, but do you think he had a better career than Simon Brown. Simon unified two of the 3 belts at 147 and upset Terry Norris when he was one of the top 3 fighters in the world.

I just realized last week this is on the same night as Canelo vs. Berlanga... how dumb. This should be the Co main event.
