Comments Thread For: Some encouragement for Canelo Alvarez - from Roy Jones Jr.

The heat that Canelo Alvarez has taken for fighting John Ryder, former 154-pound champions Jermell Charlo and Jaime Munguia and now major underdog Edgar Berlanga in succession is no crime.

While I respect Roy Jones; I must strongly disagree with him. The only legitimate win of Canelo’s career was against GGG.

All of his other victories were either controversial, overmatched or shopworn. For example: Many boxing fans thought he lost both the Austin Trout and Erislandy Lara bouts.

In addition, to those fights he defeated a shopworn Shane Mosley, Amir Khan and a Miguel Cotto; Whom many boxing fans believed that he lost also.

Lastly, for the exception of Mayweather and GGG; Canelo was the favorite in every bout he has ever competed in his entire career. Which means he took very little risks outside of the ring and is also indicative of a cherry-picking fighter.

Dude shut up. canelo is going down as an all time great whether you like it or not. Crying like a b*tch isn't gonna change that. And being the favorite in most of your fights isn't indicative of a cherry picker, it's indicative that you're probably the best fighter of your generation.

Canelo would be the favorite against David too. Is that a cherry pick?....are you also forgetting that canelo was the favorite against bivol you moron?....your logic makes zero sense. Every great fighter throughout history was the favorite in the majority of their fights doofus. It doesn't matter how much you cry like a ho, canelo is going down as an all time great. It's a fact of life. Just like it's a fact of life that you have a vagina. Just accept it.

Clenelo has already asked for re-hydrations and has weight drained fighters as well. I guess he and Tank are real true champion. Alvared is a coward thats ducking Benavidez period. no if,and or but

You're right but you can bet your ass that there will be an unforgettable asterisk saying that ( HE DUCKED BENAVIDEZ ) next to his name.

LOL, He is definitely an Hall of Fame fighter but an All-Time great; Hell no!

All Time greats are not afraid of taking ass whuppings like your husband Saul Alvarez.

The reason why he won’t fight his WBC mandatory challenger David Benavidez because he is afraid of getting his ass whooped!

That is hardly my definition of an all-time great!

When I saw Roy Jones in action for the first time, I thought damn, don't think I've ever seen such athleticism combined with those tricks before.

What happened from the Tarver fight after he went down in weight, and after the first defeat, was alarming, in going from brilliant to a shot fighter.

Also a bit of aging, but when the physical gifts eroded, he didn't have those defensive fundamentals to work with like Hopkins and Mayweather could still do.

At his best, he was as great as anyone in history. Overall, I guess I have to rate legends like Robinson, Leonard and Floyd above him.

Roy Jones has taken one to many punches. Canela is a fraud. Jones had a saying one time, "You all must have forgot". I think Jones has forgot that the fans pay him. Current Canela fans have issues, they keep buying his mismatches. If the fans stood together, didn't buy Canela's PPV (?) fights, Canela would think twice or retire.

It's a shame that all fighters aren't held to the same standard as Canelo.

ummm they are, especially those making comparable money. Floyd went through the same thing during that showtime contract phase. A guy getting paid 35 million to fight John Ryder is not good for the sport at all. Sorry to break it to some folks here, it’s not because all it does is make other fighters want to hold out for a mega check. This is why I’m glad the saudis are in boxing. So the money excuse can be finally put to rest and even with their money you have Canelo saying no to them because they want him to step it up a notch for his pay. Imagine a tennis player saying I’m #1 in the world while ranked so but saying they won’t play the second best player. This is the only sport you see this nonsense in. You ain’t fighting the best, retire.
