  • Is Berlanga any good?

I am not familiar with him, that is why I ask.

He is a young and a big dude. He should be able to do against Canelo at least as good as Munguia did.

I am tired of these bigger dudes fighting scared to death like Zurdo against Bivol.

Doesn't have world class skills. His last few fights they have tried to add more skills and now he thinks too much and he waits around. Many times he looks confused, at this point he should be reacting instead of thinking.

He will always have the punchers chance but Canelo's skills will get him through the fight.

I don’t think he’s as bad as ppl r trying to
make him but he’s very untested. I didn’t understand the hate for Munguia bc Munguia had wins against fighters who fought at a world class level esp Chenko who gave every elite fighter hell. Berlanga doesn’t have that but he had size and youth on his side which can go a long way against Canelo. Canelo has ALOT of wear and tear and always had stamina issues

          - - He's better than U, which of course damns him to faint praise.

Yes He is a good, solid pro with skills and power. That said, he has imo no chance of beating Canelo, who is superior to him in every way from what I have seen.

I personally didn’t have a problem with the Munguia getting a crack at Canelo, either.

The championship heart he showed in the Chenko fight and the stoppage over Ryder was good enough to call Canelo’s attention.

Berlanga…has…the big 17(?) win 1st round KO streak and then…….lukewarm performances in which he bit an opponent when frustrated…and just doesn’t look special or remarkable when the fights go the distance.

I had a lot of problems with munguia getting the chance over benavidez and Morrell jr. He got the attention because he wasn't good enough and beating a journeyman and a past his prime deryvachenco, with a lot of struggles I might add, doesn't qualify him as #1 contender.

Good is relative. He's good enough to beat guys like Demond Nicholson (a journeyman opponent for most of his career), Roamer Angulo and Jason Quigley.

He's also limited enough to struggle against journeymen and fringe contenders like Coceres and Rolls.

He's benefited from careful matchmaking and having the backing of powerful promoters throughout his career. He has no significant wins against legitimate contenders that were anywhere near their prime. I don't think he beats Benavidez, Morrell, Mbilli or a host of other fighters around 168.

The only reason he's deserving of the fight is because his promoter got him ranked #1 (jumping seven spots) by a sanctioning body, because of his heritage and because he's viewed as being a safe opponent for Canelo.

He's levels below Canelo and has no legitimate chance of a win barring Canelo suffering an injury or getting old overnight.

Outside of Benavidez getting a shot (which has been beaten to death honestly), Munguia wasn’t all that bad. Bare minimum he was going to give fans a rousing effort. And he did despite being defensively poor.

Berlanga…I don’t know what he has to make it interesting. His power? He hasn’t stopped anybody nor come close aside from his last opponent, and it wasn’t a “wow, that kid has ‘it’!”

Berlanga is like Munguia but worse overall.

It’s like taking a car and exchanging its body frame for something more brittle (questionable chin), low to average RPM’s (punches per round), and not knowing how the engine’s going to perform when revved up for the first time ON THE DAY OF THE RACE.

Nobody knows how Berlanga is going to perform once he sees the fight environment in a Canelo atmosphere where HE (Berlanga) is the guy that’s supposed to be the guy everyone wants to see KO’D. Munguia at least passed the gut check. I could see Berlanga getting overwhelmed by the moment and doing something out of left field in frustration or mentally checking out a la Victor Ortiz.

And I didn’t think Munguia was going to blow out Chenko like most did cause Chenko is a hard fighter to go in with. Sort of like Provodnikov back in his day.

Chenko gave GGG problems, Daniel Jacobs problems, Carlos Adames problems. Only guy to get by relatively by Chenko was, surprisingly, Jermall Charlo. And, as of a couple weeks ago, Christian Mbilli as apparently the wheels have fallen off the Chenko bus as his arm became incapacitated.
