Comments Thread For: Comparisons to Floyd Mayweather, Pernell Whitaker, and other all-timers don't shake out well for Shakur Stevenson

The year is 2044. Shakur Stevenson, 47-year-old retired boxing great, is going to earn in excess of $20 million for an exhibition bout against John Gotti IV, such is the enduring public interest in this crossover sports celebrity several years after his hall-of-fame induction

Journalists paying more attention to Floyd’s circus shows rather than the modern fighters doesn’t help either.

How about writing an article promoting Tank vs Shakur being a potentially massive fight for boxing.

"Phase One of Stevenson’s career is over. Phase Two begins now"

Phase One: tell everyone how great u raising huge expectations get labelled a generational talent, part II of phase 1, turn down one of the biggest fights in boxing & then hissy fit retire when things not going your way then finally, send half your fans to sleep while claiming everyone is ducking u

cant wait for phase 2, maybe turki can save the day, long live turki

"He has, in Tank Davis, a potential opponent who could be, in various ways, his Diego Corrales, his Gatti, and his Ricky Hatton." Mayweather beat the brakes off those three. How in the world could Tank be them in ANY way to Stevenson?

Shakur's issues are entirely self caused, not due to unfair comparisons. He's literally called himself the next Mayweather, the next Sugar Ray. He doesn't step on the gas, then whines about race when he gets called out for never going into another gear. He hits women. He runs his mouth constantly on social media promising this fight or that, which don't materialize, or promising a show, then delivering a snooze fest. And when his big shot came vs Haney, he played diva and turned down a 25% split to become undisputed champion and didn't bet on himself. Now, rather than fight the aforementioned Tank, he signed with the one promotional company Tank's team said would sink any possible Tank fight. Who is he supposed to fight on DAZN?

Also, why the disrespect to Jamel Herring? Herring absolutely deserves to be on the list of his best opponents, especially over some that did get included. And this piece didn't get proofread. Several typos, and wording reminiscent of our old, possibly AI "friend" Hans Themistode.

Shakur is his own person. There'll never be another Pernell. Different styles altogether. Only similarities are they are lefties with defensive skills. They don't operate the same in the ring, nor do they share the same mentality. Let Shakur grow into whoever he'll become. The people who say Shakur is boring, well beat him up then, get rid of him

Super well written, and on point. Shakur is a prisoner to unrealistic expectations that he himself created. Rock meet hard place.

I have to agree on all points here . This is the hole he dug himself in . He has to fight a credible opponent soon . Hes young still. Women mistakes happen with all fighters. It's a rite of passage. Ayo listen he'll get mad cred if he cant be beaten . It goes both ways . And I'm smoking a big blunt pondering.
