Benavidez gave up a lot of his leverage by losing his title on the scales and getting popped with that nose candy.

He would have had a more legit claim if Canelo wanted all the straps at 168. Due to his lack of discipline Canelo didn’t have to fight him to get what he wanted.

Its not like Benavidez is a big draw on his own. His only solo PPV bombed badly and his last fight was on someone else’s PPV card. Canelo makes his guaranteed purse no matter who he fights so Benavidez isn’t any more lucrative than other options. Boxing fans want it but the casuals don’t give a flying **** a out Benavidez.

OP’s point stands . Benavidez actions made him hope for a Canelo payday rather than being in a position to force it.

Canelo-Benavidez

Canelo would be UP for this fight. Reynoso found the blueprint to take the fight to Golovkin, the one they laughed at Roach for when Fury fought Wilder. Benavidez is neither. Benavidez is not knocking out Canelo and is too fundamentally flawed to outbox him. While making Benavidez fight off the back foot, Canelo would rip his body, especially when Benavidez shells up both on and off the ropes. Benavidez, who fights tall, would have to employ a Kovalev-type jab (he doesn't have) to touch Canelo, whose high guard catches and upper body movement slips most of Benavidez's squared up arm punches. Benavidez lunging in leaves himself open to Canelo's timing and thus, counters, while Canelo's footwork lets him take rounds off escaping Benavidez who is usually off balance, especially at times his stance is too wide. Down the stretch, Benavidez walks into the punch Reynoso specifically has Canelo work on for 8 weeks. Most likely, a more powerful version of the hook Gavril KD'd him with.

the problem is that we dont know exactly what these guys weigh in the ring anymore because they dont list the weights for some odd reason even tho the sport is based around weight

but bivol is not a big rehydrator so he stays fairly close to his weighin weight on fight night, canelo is the opposite he always puts on lots of weight, i would say canelo at 168 is easily early 180's in the ring, exactly where bivol is, bivol says he weighs about 183 on the night now which matches with hbo's figures for him so its not the crazy mismatch size wise that canelo fans like to make out it is, there is zero evidence for that, if fact the evidence is for the opposite

He had WBC belt at 168 twice, he lost it twice outside of the ring, because he was ****** and unprofessional.

When Canelo entered 168, he wanted all the belts he fought every guy that had any belt at 168. He would have fought Benavidez if he had had the belt.

Now it is too late. After Bivol fight Canelo plays is safe. His biggest challenges would be Bivol at 168 or 175, Beterbiev at 175 or Benavidez at 168, but he won`t take any of these fights and he doesn`t have to.

I would have thought it was clear by now that Canelo would never have fought Benavidez and would never have tried to go undisputed if David had a belt. Just as he never did at 160 when Andrade had the last belt. You seem to love living in fantasy land though.

Eeeeeexactly. They never show what they weigh on the night. It's the last sneaky thing a boxer can do for an advantage on fight night, outweigh your opponent. But they all know the game.

Bivol was on an all protein diet (as of last year) yet is able to cut some serious weight. There's no way he was any less than 12-17 lbs heavier than Canelo on the night. And it sucks because he had the height, reach, youth, size, and power advantage enough to beat legendary Canelo by just controlling the distance with his simple 1-2

Andrade was a way harder fight for Canelo at 154 & 160
