  • How would you rate Shawn Porter's career?

Shawn Christian Porter (born October 27, 1987) is an American sports commentator and former professional boxer who competed from 2008 to 2021. He was a two-time welterweight world champion, having held the IBF title from 2013 to 2014 and the WBC title from 2018 to 2019. Porter was particularly known for his aggressive pressure fighting style, physical strength, chin, and high workrate.

He has a record of 31 wins (17 via KO), 4 losses and 1 draw. He has beaten Alexander, Malignaggi, Broner, Berto, Granados, Danny Garcia, and Yordenis Ugas. He also a gave a competitive bout to Errol Spence losing by Split Decision.

My only nitpicks would be that I thought Ugas should won in their bout, Porter could also box pretty well when he wanted to but rarely displayed it, could had performed better against Crawford.

Not only the opponents he fought, but WHEN he fought them - prime time.

good career. Grit and determination made up for a lack of elite skills. Made some good money and got out.

I'd say thats a pretty good career

real raw real raw likes this.

Dead average really. In the grand scheme of things.

Decent fighter who managed to win a world title and had some decent wins so fair play but he was for from elite.

People just love to give extra points for being in the welterweight division...

I say he did pretty great, while I agree he shouldn't automatically be a Hall Of Famer just for being a well accomplished Welterweight.

He accumulated some consistent big names on his resume, the biggest Danny Garcia a great fighter at 140 and Ugas became champ.

Would say he could had against Thurman considering how close it was, but apperantly Keith was coming of an injury and wasn't active for a full year.

He was also a pretty difficult target for Spence to catch until the eleventh round and landed some big punches on Spence flush.

Zero chance he gets in the HOF. If he does that a travesty. If that’s a great career then fuck me what does great even mean any more?

He was never the #1 guy in his division, he was never the lineal champion or anywhere close to it, he was never a P4P fighter, he was basically a contender who held a paper belt.

You list Garcia and Ugas, I thought he lost to both, especially Ugas.

His biggest fights, Thurman, Brook, Spence and Crawford, he lost.

How many top 5 ranked fighters did he beat? I think it’s zero. If it’s not it’s not many.

If that’s the career of a great then that’s nothing short of sad.

I understand Ugas, but not sure if Danny had won that bout. As for the rest, you made a quite good case. Should probably rethink how good career actually was.

Thoughts on Spence's resume however? He was a P4P fighter and had wins against similar opposition. (DSG, Porter, Ugas and Brook)

I thought Garcia won, at the time thought he won on second watch thought he won a lot closer than first watch.

Spence was an elite fighter, whether he is now, not sure.

The thing that was elite about him was his desire to actually fight so you knew he was going to push people he went up against, but I think that’s why he retired, because he knew that was his next role. So if he can lose to someone like Keith Thurman, Terence Crawford, Errol Spence, and have close fight with Ugas and Danny? He was going to truly be defined as a gatekeeper. I thought Adrian had a great chance to beat him and his career was good for what it was. He was a tough customer but nah.
