I think you are confusing mandatory with being ranked #1. You will recall that the IBP mandatory is William Scull. This preceded the WBC mandatory. It is reported that Canelo has reached a deal with Scull to pay him to step aside. This move allows Canelo to continue as IBFP for the time being thus enabling Canelo to fight someone else. Had Benavidez exercised his mandatory right with the WBC Canelo would have been forced to fight Benavidez in his next fight or lose the WBC belt. The WBC mandated that Benavidez choose between fighting Canelo or the Bivol v Beterbiev winner. For reasons of his own Benavidez has not exercised that right and has twice asked for an extension to make that decision. As they say, the ball is in Benavidez's court. In my view, Benavidez Jr. and Senior are whiners who always play the victim card and are a bit dim-witted.Comment

Looks like Canelo turned 34 years old today, if he doesn't plan to actually to fight his mandatories or at least more worthy challengers that's fine, he can fight Eubank Jr, Jermall Charlo, Belanga and Pacheco or whoever, but he should stop withholding the division by not having the belts hostage.
Whatever he did in the past has nothing to do with whats going on the sport now, no one can earn the right to cherrypick in a title bout, that just sounds like fanboy nonsense. Canelo vs Benavidez should had happened by 2021-2024, quite a disappointing outcome.Last edited by Malvado; 07-18-2024, 12:52 PM.Comment

You are one lazy casual. There are tons of commentary and articles on this, including official statements from WBC. Here is one from Boxing Scene.
