Well Wilder, it's been a fun ride. Given your severely limited skills and very late start in boxing, you went further than 99.9% of boxers. Enjoy your retirement and thanks for the memories!

he was being promoted as one of the best heavyweights in the world and maybe of all time and one of the biggest punchers of all time. he wasnt being promoted as "isnt this guy good for a guy with no skill at all?"

I was just talking about Jerry Quarry the other day, dude stepped into the ring and went to war with so many legends: Ali, Frazier, Foster, Shavers, Mathis, Norton, Chuvalo, etc. Foreman said he was the greatest HW to never win the championship. He may not be far off with that statement.

I was pretty ambivalent to Wilder during his career. First time I saw him was probably against Stiverne in their first fight and, I'm ashamed to admit this, I was a fan of Bermaine at the time (although that lethargic effort was disappointing).

Anyway, Wilder did well for himself. Got in the sport late and made life-changing money to ensure his daughter could have the best life possible. Was he a manufactured champ who benefited against carefully picked opponents? I'd say so but he still sparked most of those dudes out in highlight reel fashion.

His power was very real and he rode it for as long he could. If he doesn't fight again, he can still be proud of what his career has provided him and his wars against Ortiz and Fury.

There was a time when people on this forum were matching him up against the greats and people were actually picking Wilder to beat some of them.

We can look back at it and laugh now, but those were serious discussions back in the day
