  • Comments Thread For: Canelo, Usyk Take Conflicting Approaches to IBF Mandatories

Two proud champions who've conquered all challengers in the ring now find themselves sucker punched by the petty requirements of retaining their belts.

Canelo taking the Crawford route and vacating. Just that Crawford didn't want to face Ennis and Canelo doesn’t want to fight a no name. He will want Benavidez to come back down and give him a rehydration clause.

I've been a Canelo fan in the past, but that makes 3 of 4 mandatories he's ducked. People can say Scull is a nobody, but Canelo was willing to fight Ryder and Yildirim... Make it make sense...

At least Ryder had close fights with Callum Smith and Danny Jacobs. In my opinion he beat Smith and lost to Jacobs, but the scorecards came back with a loss against Smith and a win over Jacobs. But the point is that at least we saw he could hang with world level guys. We haven't seen that at all with Scull.

The Yildirim fight came while he was still chasing the undisputed status. He's already achieved it and defended it 4 times now, so he cares much less about it now than when Yildirim was mandatory.

The IBF has to differentiate between someone fighting for undisputed where without a rematch clause there would be no fight (Usyk-Fury), and someone who is undisputed already and won't fight a legit contender (Canelo-Benavidez). In essence, the IBF would deprive us of an undisputed HW fight to keep their blown-up importance. We don't need a 4th sanctioning body. If they are putting up contenders like Scull (IBF) or Yildirim (WBC), or Manuel Charr (WBA) for that matter, or Rolly Romero (WBA), they have lost their relevance and are proving that 4 championship openings are too many. Let one of them die out or two merge.
Usyk should hold all the belts until December and then he or Fury could fight Hrgovic or Dubois. Get the winner step aside money and Hrgovic or Dubois can fight the Usyk-Fury winner next spring, I read that Charr was able to go to court to keep his title, but Benavidez is stonewalled. Usyk should be granted the undisputed title until 2025; Canelo should be dethroned. As of now, Benavidez is listed as the WBC regular champ at 168 and nowhere else. If Manuel Charr can win in court, David Benavidez should be able to force a fight with Canelo.
Long-term we need a boxing commissioner, someone with authority. I vote for Larry Hazzard Sr. to give us a few years and train his successor. Boxing is in fantastic shape as far as its fighters go - a ton of top quality talent with intriguing personalities, but it is too fragmented and illogical and the sanctioning bodies are a detriment.

Boots is unlucky with the timing, similar to when Carl Froch was just as justified in wanting to fight Calzaghe but Calzaghe was already an aging superstar with bigger potential events to engineer.

As for Canelo, he's ready to fight Benavidez, he just wants his eight hundred thousand million dollars in advance

Why not make hrg/Dubois an interim title fight? Tell usyk to fight the winner after the rematch or he gets stripped.
