In his 20s he cared too much about fans and media opinions on opponent selection. He took it personally, you can see in past interviews that it was personal for him to be accused of ducking so-and-so. And he would answer those accusations with immediate negotiations for a fight. That’s why in his 20s he had fights with the best names of his time and many different styles, around his weight class. Mayweather, Cotto, GGG 2x, Lara, Trout, Jacobs, Kovalev.
I think in his 30s, he’s fought some good fighters like Plant, Saunders, Callum, Bivol, Ryder but you can see now interviews he’s more dismissive of opinions against his opponent selection. He knows what comes after he fights who ever they say he’s ducking: More names, more accusations. And he’s done with it. If he’s fights and beats Benavidez, why not rematch Bivol if he beats Beterbiev? Why not fight Beterbiev if he beats Bivol? Why not fight David Morrell, you’re scared? Why not fight Jai Opetaia at Cruiserweight?
Crawford on the otherhand, it seems like he could fight one good name every 5 years, preferably one close to retirement, and media and fans call him the GOAT of this era.
