It can also be something as simple as they went up against another fighter who was just in better condition than them.

Similar to a fast break style of basketball where the team pushes the pace to take advantage of their smaller, faster, more well conditioned players....

There are pressure fighters like Juan Diaz, Margarito, Pacquiao who push the pace to take advantage of their better conditioning.

Also, the "make weight" process is debilitating.

During training camp, you are at your best. Eating well, training, resting, drinking as much water as you want.

Then, on fight week, you start to cut weight. Your mouth is dry, you go to one meal per day, and you start trying to make the weight limit. Right after weigh-in, you rehydrate and have a good meal - but you haven't really fully recovered from cutting weight.

That is why you see many heavyweights don't struggle with that, even though they carry twice the bodyweight of a lightweight.

And, I believe, that is why Mayweather was unwilling to make weight for Marquez. Floyd didn't even try, because he wasn't going to tax his body.

It's like any sports. You gas even if you trained really well. Sometimes you gas cause its a really physical match and your body starts to break down. Sometimes you gas cause mentally you are anxious or nervous and it wastes lots of energy. Its similar to football when you see teams that are physical they wear down the other team and the other team is basically dead by the 4th quarter
