It can be a variety of reasons depending on the fighter.

He could have overtrained which means his form peaked too early in his camp and he burned himself out for the fight so he doesn't have much energy for the fight.

He could have undertrained which means he trained too little and didn't build up the amount of conditioning needed to go 12 hard rounds.

It could ne nervous energy where a fighter gets that adrenaline pumping early in a fight, throw a bunch of shots and all of a sudden run into a wall and never get his second wind.

It could be a mental thing where a fighter gets tired just because he thinks he can't go on anymore.

It could be plain old age and/or wear and tear, your body just can't get back energy as quickly when you get older, sometimes those second winds never come when you get older, which is why a lot of older fighters can fight well for 4 rounds or so, get tired and fade.

    It could be many things.

I agree. Against Margarito, Cotto was up against a relentless attack he was likely not expecting, but fought on mentally until he could no more.

Cotto was well conditioned that night, but he was pushed beyond is stamina threshold and had to succumb to the pressure of self preservation.

It's about the damage they take too when you take good punches to the jaw and to the body without headgear and with the greater power that is going to be used in a real prize fight your legs start to give up on you and your core does too which can make you really fatigued. Thats why core training and necks are so important but it doesn't solve all your problems. It's also important to note that not all fighters train at the same intensity. It takes a gifted mind and body to train at the level of guys like pacquioa, mayweather, and some of the other top conditioned athletes of the sport.

This is a really good point.

From a medical standpoint, there can be genetic issues that affect this. I was a US Air Force Medical Technician for almost 5 years and have seen this kind of thing before. A sub specialty of internal medicine is Cardiology. I have worked with a few Airmen before who train their hearts out but still can't keep their stamina in tact for even relatively small sprints. This sometimes has to do with the size and shape of the heart itself, and the Aorta, which is responsible for regulating blood flow. Sometimes an athlete is just born with these issues that cannot be overcome. It surely doesn't mean they cannot perform at the top level of their respective sport, only that if they have to stay focused and sharp for the long hall, they will most definitely have issues.

nerves and adrenaline dump................ also boxers get a second wind too, provided that they're in good shape.

When you train, you ultimately train at a familiar pace. In a fight you can get gassed out if the person drags you to a pace you're not familiar with.

What makes you think you they dont gas in training?

It doesnt take a month or two to build up your stamina, just like training any muscle group, it can take years to reach a desired result.

It can also be genetic. Some guys can look like Wlad but cant run more then 3km...others can look like butter been and run miles non stop.

Don't forget if the fighter is fighting against a body puncher. Body punching breaks down fighters as well
