Should retired fighters be allowed to be commentators without any qualifications?

Can you imagine, and I really want you to think about this....
Imagine watching a fight with a commentary team made up of Clarissa Shields and Tony Bellew

Those guys you mentioned like bradley and sergio are company men now. They are going to push the narratives of that company. They may be wrong many times, but they are probably doing the right things for that company. You noticed that when they do normal interviews on youtube channels, they aren't as outlandish, have more reasonable comments and are more down to earth on their opinions compared to how they were on air.Last edited by Lance98; 04-08-2024, 12:31 AM.

If they can get a check, more power to them.
None of the former fighters are as bad as Chris Mannix and talking is supposed to be what that dude is good at.

When it comes to boxing, a commentator likely needs to:
-Report the details of the live game, and intentionally excite the crowd with charisma and sharing play by play updates to the audience.
-Operate a video camera or audio equipment during the game. They also likely need to write down notes like a schedule, scorecards like Chris Mannix (don't like the guy) or info that can be brought up later.
-Analyze, Write down and Report the fighter's history. Explain the fighters style/skills and the gameplan needed to execute the win. Also study past fights, and keep up with any boxing news behind the scenes or what's already spread world wide.
Of course there are plenty of athletes that can do commentating about the sport with their actual experince in professional boxing being actually participating in the ring and collaborating with others that now about their field like journalism or handling equipment. Like others have written, there are boxers who are quite more entertaining, have a particular fanbase, are as knowledgeable and do a better job of interacting with the audience, every commentator no matter who it is has he is own biases aswell which I forgot to take into account, the biases exist whether they are fighters or not.
What I don't think I like is that promotions like Top Rank permanently hired certain boxers as commentators even if they are bad at it over other viable options, but still are around due to their popularity they have as fighters.Last edited by Malvado; 04-08-2024, 03:10 AM.dan-b likes this.
