"David Benavidez. He is the interim champion," Sulaiman said on the subject of who will be the mandatory defence for Alvarez.

"He is mandatory contender for the WBC. Benavidez’s term for the mandatory status is in March, 2024. It will absolutely be a great fight.”

Its now past (just) march 2024 so what he said didnt come to pass

No, it is about time ginger face his mandatories, the least one of them, and stop hiding behind his nonsense, and nobody is a bigger weight bully than canelo, nobody.

so what does all of this mean?

is canelo holding up the entire division? should he just be stripped of all belts and told to sling his hook?
Yes and no. Ultimately, the sanctioning organizations should be ordering the mandatories. If they're not willing to order those fights, their belts are worthless. So the division is really getting held up because everyone wants a cut of Canelo fights, but it really highlights how worthless the belts are, especially the WBA/C. It's not Canelo's responsibility to get the sanctioning organizations to order their fights, and until they order the fights, Canelo shouldn't be stripped. But they're all just wanting their cut of the Canelo cash cow. Guys won't move up or fight good fighters because they don't want to risk their chances at the Canelo paycheck. The sanctioning organizations want to keep getting their percentage from the biggest purses so they won't order the fights.

IMO, Canelo's job is to get himself the best paydays he can, as a prizefighter. If he can do that fighting bums, well, that's par for the course for most fighters (which is why it's so asinine for people to rag on Inoue, who is pretty much the only guy who uses his A-side cash cow leverage to make the biggest fights against the top fighters, but I digress). The people who should be blamed for the stagnation at 168 are the corrupt sanctioning organizations. In theory, getting mandatory fights made is their raison d'etre. In practice, they won't follow their rules if they can make more money without doing so.

Benavidez climbed up through the ranks and is interim with the WBC, not Ranked #1 anymore for a title shot, but "interim" - if you know what it means.

How else are fighters supposed to get a title shot? Should we just say **** the rank system and fight a bunch of nobodies with any names?
When the mandatory is called then that fight needs to get made and I'm not even saying Benavidez doesn't deserve to be in that mandatory position. Make the fight or drop the belt Canelo. But until it is Canelo can do what he wants. He did more in 1 year at 168 than David has bothered to do in a career. David deserves his mandatory placement but he hasn't earned the right to dictate who Canelo should fight outside of that.
