Benavidez has been ranked number 1 in the division for years now by every credible independent ranking organization. He's the most legitimate contender to the throne, and he's been champion twice and never been beaten. Can you dig up a respectable analyst who thinks he's an overrated bum? You can't, because you know as well as Canelo does that he's the most credible threat in the division. I think Morrell could pose a challenge too, for instance, but there's zero question that Benavidez has a better resume.

He's also staying in the top in all active boxers in terms of +/-, of punches landed, and percentage of punches landed. He's one of the best combination punchers among all active boxers, exceeded only by Bam Rodriguez. Part of that is surely due to level of competition, but he's kept that alive even while stepping up competition. I personally wonder how much of it is because of size advantage, but we'll get a better look at that when he fights Gvodzyk, whose only loss has come to Beterbiev.

He's a relatively young guy, in his prime, building his resume, but stuck in divisions that have champions creating logjams at the top.
