Why do people keep saying Calzaghe ducked prime Roy Jones? When Roy was in his prime he was a superstar P4P fighter while Joe was a relative unknown in a lower weight division. How was a fight between them at that stage in any way realistic? Steve Collins opted not to fight Calzaghe because he was small fry. Jones himself ducked Collins but nobody ever goes on about that. Hopkins pulled out of a fight with Calzaghe years before they fought but he gets a pass for that too for some reason.

It's well known Collins pulled out of fighting Calzaghe late when a Jones fight was off the table. They talked about that on the "Gloves Are Off." His reasons are understandable though and it's similar situation to Calzaghe himself not fighting Froch. The venue is nothing to do with Calzaghe not fighting Jones. They were at very different stages of their career one being a superstar and the other a relative unknown until Jones is out of his prime. If he couldn't even generate enough money to get Hopkins to fight in 2002 how could he have got Jones? Even Collins was too much risk for too little reward for Jones. Collins spoke in his book about trying his hardest to get that fight done but Jones's people didn't want to risk it.kafkod likes this.

Why would he be scared to fight Johnson anyway though especially if his team were the ones proposing the fight to Johnson. It wasn't as if he was his mandatory or even or even a natural fight in his weight division. A fight with Bernard fell through years before due to him suddenly changing his demands.

Johnson was coming off the 8th Round KO of Jones. I know for a fact Joe pulled out of a proposed Johnson fight at 175 in London, claiming he had domestic martial issues on his plate.
"This is not the first time a fight between Calzaghe and Johnson (44-10-2, 29 KOs) was called off because of an injury.
When Johnson held a light heavyweight title, Calzaghe was supposed to move up in weight and challenge him on June 12, 2004. However, Calzaghe suffered a back injury and was going through an ugly divorce, and he pulled out of the fight.
Johnson went on instead to fight and knock out Roy Jones Jr. in September 2004 in a huge upset and then split a pair of memorable bouts with Antonio Tarver."
