Canelo Alvarez vs Carlos Monzon at 160, who would win?

Santos Saúl "Canelo" Álvarez Barragán (born 18 July 1990) is a Mexican professional boxer. He has held multiple world championships in four weight classes from light middleweight to light heavyweight, including unified titles in three of those weight classes and lineal titles in two. Álvarez is the first and only boxer in history to become undisputed champion at super middleweight, having held the World Boxing Association (WBA) (Super version), World Boxing Council (WBC) and Ring magazine titles since 2020, and the International Boxing Federation (IBF) and World Boxing Organization (WBO) titles since 2021.

Carlos Roque Monzón (7 August 1942 – 8 January 1995), nicknamed Escopeta (******* in Spanish), was an Argentine professional boxer who held the undisputed world middleweight championship for 7 years. He successfully defended his title 14 times against 11 different fighters and is widely regarded as not only one of the best middleweights in history but also one of the greatest boxers of all time pound-for-pound. Known for his speed, punching power and relentless work rate, Monzon ended his career with a record of 87-3-9-1 with 59 knockouts; all of his losses were early in his career and were avenged. Inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1990, he was chosen by The Ring magazine in 2002 as the 11th greatest fighter of the last 80 years and voted him as the best middleweight title holder of the last 50 years in 2011. As of January 2018, Monzón holds the 2nd longest unified championship reign in middleweight history at 9 consecutive defenses. Monzón spent five and a half years in prison for killing his wife Alicia by throwing her off a balcony, and admitted that he had hit every single woman that he had dated.

Monzons biggest advantage is his height, he fought a truck load of bums, his biggest name opponents where all at the very end of their careers, Griffith 13 loses, Napoles 5 losses, Briscoe 10 loses, Benvunite 6 losses, out side of those guys there's nothing, most having double digit loses.

Monzon I feel was overrated in the big picture of histories MWS, he was slow and rather flat footed with a big punch and his home grown resume is embellished by his KO record, I would take Canelo to get inside and break him down and Canelo takes his shots winning with speed on the inside which Monzon never had.

Monzon as great as he was didn't have the best work ethic Canelo has faced and beaten bigger men than Carlos.

I got Canelo by competitive decision no one gets stopped here.

I think you can flip a coin on this one, none of them have a signature win. One thing for sure Monzon never ducked anyone and yes, guys like Briscoe and Griffith have some loses on their resume, there's a simple explanation for that, unlike canelo they fought everybody .

Monzon never really fought anyone near their better years, Emile had 76 fights , Naploes gave him a lot of weight and was a WW having something like 80 fights, I remember the Monzon time because my ol man was a fan of Tony Mundine, I remember gathering around a B/W tv watching Mundine beat Griffith in Paris and the ol man skipping around like a kid lol, and Tony was a glass jaw guy, he could box his ass of but if you clipped him it was like Khan.

I would actually take a number of the top modern MWs to beat Monzon he was just to slow for modern great fighters, he was fabricated by fighting at times monthly knocking over loads of nobodys, dig into his resume and its all there.

Monzon however had a great gas tank to go all twelve unlike Canelo. (Although Alvarez seemed to recover more quickly compared to 168) Also I don't think that because Canelo has beaten fighters physically bigger fighters than Dimitrii Bivol like Plant and Kovalev, means he can beat Bivol himself who also had a great distance control like Monzon.

Though Monzon fought nothing like Bivol as he was more of a boxer-puncher, he was more flat footed and utilized his dimensions/height (stood at 5'11 with a 76 in reach) rather than utilizing mobile footwork to force his opponent at long range jabs/combinations to outbox/outwork his opponents similarly to Benavidez. Albeit he was quite slower in comparison to David and more technical sound, he seems to start slow, ramping up per round to analyze his opponent's sense of distance.

Also, despite the reputation of Escopeta's knockout streak, he wasn't particularly the biggest puncher though it shouldn't be underestimated, he still put a lot of people into the canvas and he himself had a granite chin has only been knocked down once, at the end of his career and still won. Also his defense is too reliant on his opponent's distance, as he tends to pull away so his opponent won't reach. (he does it really well), however his defense isn't as good at close range unlike Canelo's. (Though Monzon sparred with Nicolino Locche, he should be able to land many hard shots like Jacobs and Golovkin did.)

Canelo should be able to neutralize Monzon's long range punches with his waist/head movement while blocking/parrying with his high guard and cut the ring to make it a fight in the phone booth in short spurts throughout the fight. But can he outwork Carlos? I don't know.

Monzon was a killer (literally) and would probably catch Canelo.

If he don't want to fight Benavidez, he definitely aint gonna fight Monzon

He can't outwork Monzon, and same day weight in. He threw a bunch of punches and was very accurate.

Against shop worn smaller guys and a vast majority of tomato cans, a fighter can appear very different when the class is raised. Go and dissect Monzons resume its not much with 80 stiffs as opponents, its the only way you can fight every mth fight easy beats, as soon as I see a bunch of guys with loads of loses all the way across from start to end the resume is padded.
