Morrell To Fight In May; Opponent TBA

Luis De Cubas Sr. said today that David Morrell will be fighting in May versus an undetermined opponent. No exact date, just the month. I’m happy David is getting back in the ring, but this doesn’t bode well for the quality of his next opponent. Probably just a stay busy fight.

Glad to hear, even if it is a stay-busy. Beggars can't be choosers. Get them in the ring, knock them down, call some people out, then do it again in 3 months.

Agreed, that’s gotta be Morrell’s approach; but I’m itching to see what he can do against someone worthy. Like many others here, I’ve got strong regard for David’s ability; but we won’t know for sure until he’s tested.

That "worthy" opponent won't come if he doesn't keep his name buzzing. I advocate the old-school approach of high activity and entertainment value, but Eff Pandas has also stressed the importance of Morrell improving his English and cultivating an social media presence in order to make the fans clamor for his bouts. Morrell has a lot of work to do, and tbh, he should've fought earlier than May with how he destroyed Agbeko. Whether in English or Spanish, he needs to start doing more interviews and Q&A's.

And honestly they need to up his opps too. Hes been fighting the same level guys for awhile now. He needs to fight a top 30ish boxrec ranked guy in May. And the higher ranked the better.

But yea I think almost everyone these days, esp high level talent guys like Morrell, need to hire a social media guy. And there is such an uphill battle to make a non-US/Mexican/PR guy popular in the US you need to do some extra sh^t & be entertaining/charming enough to get the attn of fans like Manny & GGG were able to do against the odds. I think Morrell & Andy Cruz both have that kind of potential if they learn English well enough to casually speak it & just be themselves with their light & fun personalities.

Is there any rumors who hes fighting in May?

I’m hoping Morrell has a better than average work ethic. It’s hard as hell to make it as a fighter, it’s even harder to become a star — much harder. Very few fans appreciate any of it. If David wants to be special, he’ll do the things like learn to speak English. He can’t rely on his handlers to make all the moves; he has to insist they get him regular fights — quality fights. I’m a student of human performance, high achievers. I love to observe someone reach the heights, learn from and be inspired by them. Floyd gets a lot of hate around here, but his incredible drive and work ethic earns him great respect in my mind. A guy like Morrell (and we’ve seen countless like him) has a tendency to rely too much on his natural ability. He’ll train just enough to get by. It’s just a job. At the top, everyone is talented. Work ethic separates the elite from the merely talented.

Cruz has great skills, but he appears to lack power. Unless you’re Sweet Pea, I don’t see that combination making anyone very marketable these days — especially if they don’t speak English. Maybe Andy has a real warrior spirit — that would be a true selling asset — but guys like him tend not to, as they’re not used to getting into firefights. Morrell has much greater upside, in my opinion, especially if he gets Canelo fight exposure. David is a destroyer (so far), and he’s a fairly good-looking kid.

And, BTW, De Cubas made that announcement yesterday. No apparent opponent rumors yet.

He needs to systematically chop down the WBA's top 15:
                    Edgar Berlanga
                    Christian Mbilli
                    Erik Bazinyan
                    Uwel Hernandez
                    Bektemir Melikuziev
                    Caleb Plant
                    Pablo Corzo
                    Luis J Rodriguez
                    Bek Nurmaganbet
                    Trevor McCumby
                    Diego Pacheco
                    Simon Zachenhuber
                    Pavel Silyagin
                    Ernesbadi Begue
                    Callum Simpson

If his team can't get him consistent fights, then they need to appeal the WBA to make them mandatory for Canelo. If that doesn't work, then Morrell needs to find a team who CAN help him.
